viberating steering wheel
hey all. i've been a lurker on here for a while now, since i've always been able to find the answers i'm looking for until now. i hit my 240 into a curb a few months ago and as a result everytime i hit the freeway and go above 55mph the steering wheel shakes back and forth. since then i've replaced the tension rod bushings, the outter tie rods(since the bushings were busted), steering rack boot, and got an alignment. this basically reduced the angle of viberation and how much it jolts back and forth but it is still viberating. i can see any other physical damages to parts, so i'm wondering if you guys have any idea. thanks.

you wheels are bent
|
simple.
get new rims. |
bent rims? it doesn't seem like its bent. plus the car doesn't pull to one side. i remember hitting the tires only, no contact to the rims. but i'll switch the front and rear tires to test this out. thanks for the input.

yeah my car does the same thing, between 70-85.
You need to go to a shop and have them "balance your tires" they will weld little weights to the inside to make it steady, tell him between what speeds it happens. Bring it to someone who know's what they'redoing. Like a goodyear shop. |
actually my tires were recently balanced... by myself =) but i'll be sure to check the balancing again. thanks.
|
its your rims. happened to me before. tires are probably ok.
|
first guess - bent wheel. 2nd guess - something bent in the suspension.
1 - you balanced them yourself? How? Did you do static, or dynamic? Are you using stickers or clamps? Answer this, if you can. 2 - the eyeball is not an accurate way to see if something suspension-wise is bent. |
check the wheel bearings for excessive play. look at the inner/outer lip of the wheel and check for warps.
|
if the wheels aren't bent then 100 bucks say it's your DIY wheel balance. Have a professional have them done, they're pretty cheap per wheel.
|
what you need to do is find yourself a newer balancing machine that can measure the road force and runout and all that good stuff. i work at a nissan dealer and we have one of those you would be amazed what that machine picks up that the regular balancder doesnt even notice
