turbo after 100,000miles?

I have a 1993 240 with 120,000 miles, and I heard that you shouldnt waste your time turbo charging your engine with more than 100,000 miles. I have the stock ka24de does any one know if there is any truth to this?

I dont have much experiance with the KA motors, but on long living motors shuch as the KA, it should take boost if its still in good condition. i wouldnt get to extreme with the boost levels either. just like 5-7psi

there are some tests you should do. I know that you should do a compression check, leakdown test. Um... if i can find the link ill post it for ya

I don't know if this could relate but...a Friend of mine had a Mx6 w. 200k+ miles on his engine and upgraded his cute turbo to a DSM 16g and boosted it to 19psi .. He ran it like this for a while till he got into a "rally crash"...which was really an old lady side swiping him..but whatever makes him sleep better @ night.

Too bad he drives a miata now.

turbo charging creates more heat in the motor and with that many miles there is small room for error. If the motor is running funny now FIX IT! Because it will arise ten fold with a turbo charger. If your motor is fine I would suggest what phantom said and do a leakdown and commpression test. Before you throw the turbo on though make sure you upgrade the radiator (a must when it comes to n/a-to-turbo swaps). If everything checks out ok do it, do it. Keep the boost low and up it slowly for competition purposes, but lower it when you hit the street. Nothing is worse than having a kick ass high horsepower track machine that throws rod bearings monthly due to extensive use on the street. Keep it sweet, and simple until you hit the track or ehem.... street tracks (not endorsing street racing but it's fun as hell).

what is the highest you could run with a stock block 240? would it help to rebuild the internals, or does it rely on the block strength more?

LA_phantom_240 06-14-2005 03:13 PM

i would say you could safely boost to 6 pounds or so... good for bout 30 horses im guessing

Fast1One 06-14-2005 03:16 PM

12-15 with proper tuning and the engine has to be running GOOD.

LA_phantom_240 06-18-2005 07:41 PM

notice i said safely you douche lol. Always have to contradict me dont ya

donteventry 06-23-2005 07:55 PM

There is no truth to that at all, I have 152365 and Im rebuilding my motor and will be adding a turbo in a couple of months and its gunna be like im driving a brand new motor. So I dont know where you heard that but theres no truth to that at all. As long as your rebuilding your motor for the right thing it will last. So ya spend the money and rebuild the engine so you can have a reliable engine with boost, trust me itll be worth it in the long run when your smokin stangs...

LA_phantom_240 06-23-2005 11:15 PM

wait who are you saying has no truth? and who said hes rebuilding the motor. all i was talking about is jsut if one day he decides, "hey ima bolt on a turbo today!" now if you rebuild the motor the right way, you could run about 1.1 bar of boost IMO

Get a T28 and run 7psi daily and you will have like 220 or so and love it.

LA_phantom_240 06-24-2005 07:31 AM

thats what i was thinking of doing... well maybe not that exact turbo... hey landho, whats the difference in a t3/t4 and a t28? I cant seem to find a good answer.

nsn240 06-24-2005 05:11 PM

I dunno, but that's a good question!

Im not turbo genius but what i know is.

The T3/T4 simply means a turbo with a t3 turbine and a t4 compressor. There is nothing magical about this. There are 4 t3 turbines and 4 t3 turbine housings. There are dozens of t4 compressors and housings. Note that "t3/t4" includes hundreds of combinations. This "hybrid" allows for quick spool and able to hold high PSI.

As far as the T28 that is what the compress wheels is. I do not know the turbine wheel specs.

You cant really compare. You just need to know what power you want.
