why is my "stock" boost ~30 psi?
I just got a boost gauge installed in my sr20 s14, and i realized my boost is going VERY high if i rev it up to the redline or even close. I think it hit 1.7- bar or more, and i am really concerned about this as i'm sure it can make short work of my engine. Without doing the exact psi conversion, i know .85 bar is ~15.2 psi, and 1.05 bar is ~18 psi, so this is very roughly around 30 psi.
I have a gt3071r turbo with a tail 38mm wastegate. I just had an HKS evc-4 boost controller installed at the same time as the boost gauge (which is actually a blitz turbo timer with a gauge in it). However, even with the boost controller turned off the boost is shooting up like this. Judging by how the car felt before and after, i am pretty sure it was doing this before i even had the boost controller, although i didn't have any gauge to read it on. Now that i'm aware of this i'm just not revving the car much past 4k so the boost doesn't surge up, but i would really appciate any help so i can get it back to its proper wastegate boost. Thanks. |
what size restrictor pill are you running?
and chance the vacuum hose from the compressor housing to the wastegate actualator is disconnected or cut? |
^agreed... sounds like the wg is never opening
|
I agree that it seems and feels like the wg is never opening. I bought the car like this and my knowledge about turbos is limited (but i'm trying to read up) - what is a restrictor pill? I previously installed "boost jets" (little brass cylinders with a small hole in the center) in some vacuum lines on a 300zx tt to increase the boost level - is this the same thing? If it is, i'm not aware that my car has any at all.
As far as vacuum hoses, they all looked good, but please take a look at this pic which is the wg i have (or if not it's VERY similar): http://www.schimmelperformance.com/O...ates38_40.html What is the part of the wg called where the top nipple is, and what is the one on the side called? Right now both lines coming out of these places are connected to a boost controller actuator (i do not think the boost controller or actuator is part of the problem). If i took that controller out of the equation entirely and just ran at wg boost, where should each of those lines go? If someone can tell me that specifically enough to try doing it, i will try it and if there's still a problem it would seem to me that there is some issue inside the wg that needs to be addressed. Thanks. |
Are the vacuum lines to the wastegate hooked up to a working vac. source? Do you know if the wastegate even works? Is it possible for you to try another wastegate? I would start by answering those questions first to give us a better idea of whats going on. It is deffinately the wastegate not opening...You also might have a leak in your vacuum line leading to your wastegate which would cause a loss of pressure and would stop the wastegate from opening.

Hi, i just found out the problem today - one of the vacuum lines going to the wastegate had some sort of debris in it and it was completely preventing the wastegate from opening. Thanks all you guys for telling me what things to check. I'm glad this got resolved before doing serious engine damage!

WOOOOO 30 psi lol id do a compression check you problly had some serious pre-det.
|
glad u found it, ps 1bar=14.7psi therefore 1.7bar=25psi, is your motor stock? im suprised it didnt blow if so lol
