Tire Sizing

Hey everyone,

I finally went one size up with my wheels and got me some 17 inchers. I was wondering what tire sizes would you recommend for the car (S14 if that makes any difference).

I was told that 235/40/17 front and 255/40/17 back is a great combo. I'd like to hear some opinions and setups you may have.

depends on what the car is used for and what the specs are on ur wheels..

Well wheels are 17x9 +20mm offset.

I'll be doing mostly daily driving (spirited) and perhaps some AutoX. I think i'll want some Khumos Ecsta ASX's because of he excellent wear rate but still relatively high grip levels. I definitely like some fatter wheels to put the power down tho.

With +20 17x9s that sounds pretty good.....I've done this calculation a million times....


If you CARE about keeping speedometer reading accurate, the closest possibilities are 245/40/17 or 275/35/17

That should fit easily....I have 245/40/17 on S14 with 17x9 +17

Roll the fenders and you should be good to go, assuming you don't want tuck....If you wanna bet SUPER-slammed, you are gonna need some negative camber, but then too much defeats the purpose of having wider tires because you reduce your contact patch

YIKES! my bad the wheels are 17x8 with +20mm not 17x9....

And I forgot to mention that I would like to avoid rolling fenders if at all possible.

why is everbody so scared to roll their fenders? could somebody please tell me?

and dont worry with 17x8 you wont even need to touch your fenders.

I dunno some of us are not comfortable with altering the car's sheetmetal especially when the car is in excellent condition, at least for me, now for others I can't say.

So last question before I get booed off stage,

Speedometer reading aside what's the benefit of going 245/40 all around vs the 235/40 and 255/40 staggered setup I heard of?

I would immagine one benefit would be a better wear rate on the even setup because you can do a "proper" crossed tire rotation as opposed to just side to side. Anything else?

less understeer, but less traction in the rear.

and dude, i could care less about the sheetmetal under my fenders, its not like anybody sees it.

i would go spt's over the asx's, thats what i have and they are excellent for the price...your wheels are pretty weaksauce for s14 but whatever tickles ur fancy..id suggest 225/45/17 all around, maybe 235 in the rear

Ok, well on S14, like they said you don't have to touch the fenders if you are 17x8 +20....

Also, if you are able to get access to a real fender roller (the kind that mount on the hub), you can do it properly, within cracking or ruining the paint at all....

Also, I don't get what you said about the "cross rotation".....nearly all street radials can only rotate in one direction, so you can only rotate front to back....the only way to cross rotate would be to take the tires off the wheels and remount, which then means you should rebalance, which means you spend more money to do that then if the tires wear out.....


Same size is nice, so you can rotate....especially comes in handy....I might be going 275/35/17 in back though, I could use a little more traction with the new swap

I went with the 245/40/17 allaround setup. Wheel/tires look killer but i'm getting vibration at speeds in excess of 60 MPH. It was really bad the first day I got the tires. I went back to discount tire and had them rebalance them. Now the shake is not as bad (about half of what it was) but it's still quite noticeable (and annoying).

Could this be another bad rebalance or could it be something else? I got my car aligned a couple of weeks ago and haven't hit anything that might knock it off so I don't think that's it. I am running on coilovers but they are only a couple of months old and still in good condition. The alignment guy did mention something about my front wheel bearings (especially drivers side) causing some wheel play and needing to be repacked. Could that be the cause?

I'm out of ideas at this point.

its possible but u have to remember the car is gettin old, lots of bushings ect go bad and cause the car to shake ect..repacking them wouldnt be to hard, maybe like and hour job or so depending on ur knowledge..
