Question for all you 6 1/2's

Hi, I'm planning to mod my door speakers and was wondering what thickness MDF board I should use and if anyone knows the maximum depth speakers can go so they don't block the windows from going down. Thanks.

IF I WAS YOU I WOULD USE A 1/2" MDF BUT MODIFY THE OUTER GRILL AND MAKE IT FOR 5 1/4'S I DID IT IN MY CAR WITH SOME AVI COMPONET SPEATKERS AND THEY SOUND AWSOME. ANY TIME YOU CAN GET YOUR SPLEAKERS OUTSIDE OF THE DOOR SKIN THE BETTER OFF YOU ARE YOUR MID BASS WILL BE WAY BETTER BECAUSE IT DOSENT ROLL OFF IN TO THE DOOR. I WOULD ALSO SUGEST DOING SOME SOUND DAMPANING IN THE DOORS. THE PLATES ARE EASY TO MAKE AND THELL SOUND AND LOOK GOOD

okay, i got some speakers, and their mounting depth is 1-7/8" inch. hopefully this information can help others to give me a suggestion on the mdf thickness.

stearnzy: thanks for the response, but what do you mean by modifying the outer grill and making it 5 1/4? wouldn't that leave holes where the grill wouldn't cover? And about the dampening, good suggestion, i'll most definitely do that.

fiberglass it, mdf is too thick to make a box for the door. read my post "door speaker upgrade"

well to answer your question you have 2 1/4" of clearence from the metal door frame to the glass.

IF YOU MAKE A BOX YOU HAD BETTER MAKE IT THE RIGHT AIR SPACE LIKE I SAID IN YOUR THREAD. IF YOU DONT YOU CAN FALL INTO PROBLEMS WITH YOUR SPEAKERS NOT RESPONDING. THE AVERAGE MID NEEDS .75 CUBIC INCHES TO SOUND RIGHT]
