300ZX Diff Transplant

Hey Guys,

first off, im goin to say, this is the first nissan geared forum that dident have 12 year olds yelling "SKYLINES ARE THE BEST!!!11one" ****...

Now with that out of the way,
I have been a sideline supporter for 240's for alittle now, and im trying to soak up as much info as i can
i am lookin at getting ( another ) S13 HB ( the one i have... is to far gone ) And one of the things that i want to put on it first is a LSD ( same as any silvia admirer ) And i Ran into some information that a N/a 300zx Rear diff ( the pumpkin ) would bold into a 240 with little to no issues at all?

is this true? im assuming that the cv's and etc would need to be from the 300zx also..

thanks,

You'll need the axles from a <94 model J30. Those are the years of the 5 bolt flange (same as Z). The Z axles are about 1" too long per side.

Damn, someone told me that I needed the axles. I just bought a VLSD for 130 with the axles. Its the 5 point flange. So this means I can't put it in yet?

I also heard that I need to change out the back piece of the diff. Is this true?

Yes, you'll need to swap the rear cover to install it into an S13. And, if you bought the Z32 diff with the axles, no you can't install it until you get some J30 axles...

I just did this last week on my '89 coupe, and I can verify what everyone else has said.

The diff fits fine, but you need to swap the rear cover from the stock one onto the VLSD to get all of the mounting points to match up. You do need the J30 axles (5-bolt instead of 6), but once you have them the whole thing can be done in three hours, less if you actually know what you're going (cause I didn't).

And if anyone wants to do this, I have a spare diff with about 30,000 miles on it, but no spare axles...

how much can you pick up the axles for? I guess I would need hubs too.

The axles ran me $90... And no, you don't need hubs, they slide right in and bolt right up...

I think I seen someone right up a "how to" on the VLSD of 90 N/A 300zx and they said to change out the diff output shafts and put in the 240sx ones, then you can use your original axles.

Yes, you did. However, they have to be VLSD ouput shafts from a VLSD equipped 240sx differential... (not so easy to find, or cheap)
