Gear Ratios

whats the gear ratios for a stock 91-94 240 coupe? i wonder because i go to like american car forums and other forums like NSXprime and stuff and they all mention changing out gears and stuff for better accel or maybe top speed or just good daily driving. is there anything out there for the 240? maybe if i get enough answers this could be a sticky or something

Raine, how is 4th 1:1? My 91 hatch is 1:1 in 3rd, with a 4th overdrive and a 5 over-overdrive. Just askin, do I have a special car? lol.

you do realize that it takes a BIONIC EYE to tell if they're moving at the exact rate

That's like adjusting your camber by eyeballing it and saying "yeah... it's at 0 degrees"

Mostmanual transmission cars have thier 4th gear set at something close to 1:1. Anything above that is overdrive,

Yes I know that's how it should be, but mine runs 3rd 1:1. The tach moves with the spedo at the same rate. In fourth, the spedo is higher than the tach by a bit, and in 5th by a lot.

I'll try to take a pic sometime if i can get my friend's digital.

comparing engine rpm and actual vehicle speed isn't an exact science.

i2aine is right.

1 to 1 means 1 rotation of driveshaft equals 1 rotation of tire.

It DOESN"T have anthing to to with rpm matching speed. Even if the rpm and speed move EXACTLY the same, that doesn't mean that it is one to one. This is because different cars have different size wheels. Therefor 1 tire rotation for different cars equals different distance traveled. Therefore a 1 to 1 ratio on a truck will make the SPEEDO travel "faster" than the tach. On a car with 10 inch wheels or whatever, the Tach will move "faster" than the speedo for a 1 to 1 ratio.

This is my understanding/idea. It makes perfect sence though.

Dont forget that Lseries,naps-z, and KA are all interchangible transmissions as long as you keep the KA bellhousing. You can use a NAPS-z bell housing but there is a bolt missing in the pattern. You need an adapter plate made for the Lseries conversions. If you dont like the gear ratio you have look at the specs of the other transmissions. NISMO also offers a 5th gear ratio for those transmissions.
