simple question or two

well one thing I like about this board more than the other 240 forums i've been on is that people are cool and not 'holier than thou', which gets obnoxious for people who want to learn more like myself.

anyway, i am going to be converting my auto tranny to 5spd soon, and i'm just wondering if anyone has any recommendations for clutch linkage, ratio's(if i have to set those up) and any other technical number things. it would be most appreciated, and yes i tried the search function

Thanks alot,

Ben

Check the FAQ, I made a link to a walkthrough on doing the swap. I am in the process of purchasing the swap myself as well, and plan on doing it this spring once the snow goes away.

You won't have to set any ratio's up, the tranny has that all covered. Only think you'll need to choose is a clutch, and perhaps resurfance the flywheel.

If there are any questions the FAQ doesn't help, let me know and i'll do my best.

Actually I do have a question....what do you mean when you said 'choose a clutch'?

do you mean stock or getting a ACT one or something?

I believe that's what he meant... because since you're probably going to get a used tranny, you won't know the condition of the clutch/flywheel that's in it... for all you know the previous owner was a clutch rider... plus in a way it makes more sense to replace or upgrade the clutch and/or flywheel while the tranny is out of the car

yeah, Rainy was saying what I meant, you don't know the shape of the clutch, so buy a new one and put it in while you're doing the swap. You can get nissan replacement, Exedy (which i've heard neutral results on), or go like ACT stage 2 or whatever.

That is all.

I had owned a 2000 Impreza 2.5RS, I put a ACT Street/Strip in it along with a JUN flywheel, the clutch felt great, hard on your leg but you get used to it. I am going to go with a ACT Heavy Duty clutch. It is most likely very similar to the street/strip clutch I had, and again going with an HKS or JUN flywheel.

One thing to remember on the flywheels, in AWD you HAD to stay away from composite, or aluminum flywheels because of the heat and whatnot from the AWD trans, because it would warp. I would believe the same principle applies to these high HP RWD cars. So stay away from composites and aluminum flywheels. Also stay away from multi-piece flywheels. Spend the extra money and get a ONE-piece Chromoly Steel flywheel. HKS and Jun both have one you can get from www.srswap.com HKS: ~14lbs and if the Jun one is anything like the one in my RS it will probably be about ~12.5lbs.

Look for light weight parts - especially in the transmission; drive shaft, flywheel, axels, rims, lug nuts... all I can say is, it all adds up.
