disco potato?

Hey all I am looking to upgrade the turbo on my Skyline yet again. As you can see in my sig I have a R32 with a R33 T28 installed now. I was speaking with a large turbo company and they recommend the GT3037 "disco potato". It has a 54mmm trim on the tubine and a 62mm trim on the exhaust. What do you think? They say it can handle up to 400bhp at the wheels and make full boost (26psi) by 3,000 rpm.

I am told this is very popular with the Silvia and Skyline crowd.

I don't own one, but i recall reading about it in Super Street or something. I looked into buying one later, not sure if i am though. From what i've heard, its capable of high amounts of horsepower with virtually no lag, like you said. Garrett and JWT worked together to make it.

i thought the gt28rs was the one known as the disco potato. actually, i know for a fact it is! its a great turbo, its claim to fame is that it is supposed to make superchargers obsolete. meaning no lag! but i think its only rated for up to 350hp, which is quite a bit, but not really for a skyline.

yea i had heard the same that the gt28rs was the disco potatoe i have heard amazing things. great modern turbo technology for the internals allows an unreal quick spool from numbers you guys are talking about looks like capable of some pretty high hp too

really, A Big turbo can b a bad thing. Alot of people go to a junk yard and pick up a huge turbo (like off a diesel) and It messes up there car. I guess really it depend on how much HP tha engine is gonna make. A lil turbo aint gonna hold 450+

How can it be too small for an RB20, but not an SR20? Same displacement.

6 cyl have a different firing order. it'd spool faster on an RB20 than on an sr20

But would it spool so much faster that it would be too small? You can only get so much exhaust gas from a 2.0L. So while yes it may spool faster, i dont think the turbo would be less effective.

The RB has the same size exh ports as the SR, but has 2 more. The way I choose my turbo, is I looked at the flow charts for my desired HP, and choose a turbo that achieved this with maximum efficiency(i.e. the sweet spot or circle on the turbos flow chart). Too big the turbo will spool too slowly only good for drag racing, too small and the turbo is pushed past it's limits, becomes in-efficent and heats the air charge excessively. I have a t3/t4 hybrid on my RB20DET, it's a 63 A/R exhaust and a 57 trim compressor(cheapturbo.com). Given that I drive the car daily I would almost choose a super 60 T3 instead, but I wanted to be able to go to the strip a couple of times a year and push over 300HP so I opted for this turbo. Larger turbos also keep heat out of the engine and reduce chances of overheating=head gasket failure.
