are there and reputable places that sell red tops for cheaper than prices than heavythrottle ($2500 for full swap)? i know unstable-hybrids.com sells a front clip for $2600, but i really would prefer just the engine.

ok. there are a bunch of places that sell cheaper sr20's. one place is www.streetimports.com there are bout 2100 bucks for a complete motor. you can check e-bay but be very careful. they are not always complete. some people try to jip you.
