street legal swap
street legal swap
I have heard that a japanese engine is illegal to swap into a car and use on public roads. In California that is. So I was wondering what would be a good engine to swap into a 240, that is US spec. I was thinking about a US spec 2jz-gte from a supra, but i dont know where i can get info on this swap. I dont have a 240 yet but i plan on getting one and i dont like the stock power on the car, but i heard it handles like a dream. Any advice would be helpful, thanks.
Yes they are illegal, in all 50 states. There are no good U.S spec engines to swap in. The best bet is to turbo the existing engine. I doubt a supra motor would fit.
I could be wrong though. Power from the KA24E(89-90)is 140 hp and 150 lb ft of torque. KA24DE(91-98) is 155 hp and 160 lb ft. And yes the cars handle great stock and even better when tuned. Good luck finding a 240sx

i read somewhere on the EPA or DOT website that the only legal swaps are engines from newer versions of the same car. other than that, we're S.O.L. i'll see if i can dig up the page.
EDIT: found it. it's a PDF file on the EPA website. here's an excerpt:
here's the actual file:

For light-duty vehicles, installation of a light-duty eng~ne into a different light-duty vehicle by any person would be considered tampering unless the resulting vehicle is identical (with regard to all emission related parts, engine design parameters, and engine calibrations) to a certified configuration of the same or newer model year as the vehicle chassis, or if there is a reasonable basis for knowing that emissions are not adversely affected as described in Memo 1A. The appropriate source for technical information regarding the certified configuration of a vehicle of a particular model year is the vehicle manufacturer.
