89 intrument cluster removal

The temperature gauge does not move from 0 as the engine warms up. I traced the problem back to the instrument cluster.

To go further, I need to remove it. Easier said than done. With the help of the factory service manual, I was able to figure out how to remove most of the trim to gain access to the cluster.

The panel in front of the cluster is putting up quite a fight. This is the one that includes the emergency flasher button, rear wiper controls, and headlights switches.

I can get the panel loose, remove the electrical connectors, and almost slide it past the steering wheel tilt ****. Before I remove the tilt ****, I would like to ask if anyone has a better way to remove the cluster.

I am concerned that I might mess up the steering column somehow if I have to dig into it very far.

Thank you
JSP

Yeah i had to do the same thing in my s13, the first time i was changing out the dash because my car came with a brown interior and i wanted black. i've done it again to run all the wiring when i installed my sr20. you don't want to remove the tilt ****, the easier thing to do is take out the blinker **** and the winshield wiper ****. they both have two screws holding them in, then tilt your steering wheel all the way up, then twist that panel 180 degrees counter clockwise (toward the driver's door) hold down on the tilt **** and you can sort of pry the panel around it. thats the easiest way to do it.

if your trying to take off the bezel(has the flasher button and other things on it) i would lower the streering wheel.Take off the cover behind the steering wheel and there are two 12mm bolts you can take out, or just loosen them to make it easier.

Many thanks for the ideas.

tegg_gsr are you refering to the two bolts that attach the steering column to the frame?

project_427 Your idea sounds like it would work. I was fixated on the tilt ****. I should be more open -minded.
