Clutch master or slave?

My clutch pedal has lost all pressure. It just sits nearly at the floor and when i do push it down the one inch it will still go the clutch stays ingaged. Im sure its either the master or slave cylinders but how can I tell which one it is. I can't see a leak anywhere, but theres no fluid left in the resivoir. How can I tell which one is bad?

i doubt its the slave. the seal on your master cyl piston probably went out. the fluid gets behind the piston and keeps the pedal engaged. did it all of the sudden die or has this been a gradual problem?

Well its a gradual problem but i'm pretty sure the large puddle of fluid coming through the firewall where the clutch pedal is gives me a clue. I just didnt see it before. I replaced the master cylinder and it was better at first but its a little clunky again, hopefully a little more bleeding tomorrow will fix it.

i had the exact same problem when i first got my s13. i could barely start my car. get to it before that happens. its a pain in the ***. i replaced both the master and slave. the slave i got from autozone for cheep and the master that i got from autozone was crap so i went to nissan and got a new one in two days for 70 bucks. the clutch pedal is so nice now. also, it was a pain in the *** to bleed the clutch lines. i dont know why. i tried to use a machine to do it, but i ended up doing it by hand. good luck bro.

Thanks man. I bled it till no air came out but I think theres still some there. It was so bad that to get it into the driveway I had to put the car in reverse, start the car, move, kill the engine, shift into first, and then pull into the driveway. Now that i replaced the master the trans is 90% better. Im afraid the slave is gonna go now that theres a new master in there, but i guess ill find out.

At least if the slave does go, a new one is cheap and it only takes a few minutes to put on...
