Your friend could be running on a engine management system like a Haltec or TEC-II etc.. Those are programmable with a laptop. For a 11sec car I think he most likely is running on a stand alone engine management.

If not its probably just a data logger like the Techtom MDM-100 which is kinda like the Apex'i multi checker but much better.

Is it a old HKS CAMP system? They come with a TV display and cost next to nothing. 15,000Yen last time I checked. Otherwise it could be even a E-Manage system which cost around $350 and you can run a laptop with them.

I think its the best route to take specially when you turbo a N/A car. It can be pricey but if you think about it, with all the piggy backs your gonna have to have anyways the price is a little bit more for an engine management system depending on what you get

The E-management isnt pricey. it real cheap, thats why i ask if there are opinions. Im going standalone, but not with the greddy e-management, but if anyone has any cars running on one im interested to see what they think about the parameters it offers.

I'll get a friend to post on here who just bought one for his Sil-80. People seem to like them in Japan especially since they cost about $340 for the entire thing. Of course getting it turned in the US might be tough.

Not sure how many average people you have ever met who were capable of tuning their car with their laptop but if your going to give it a try then I hope you at least have a EGT and or a A/F ratio gauge.

Yeah definitely have an EGT. The A/F ratio gauge is worthless. Its not wideband so thats why I recommend doing your hard tuning on a dyno. Its costly but effective. Then your small tuning can be done on the road.

Yes i have a air/fuel, and egt guage. I think the e-management windows application i semi easy to tune if you know what your doing.
I do have access to a dyno. I just fail to see how good the parameters on the emanage are, and the features it has. I dont know anyone with one, so i dont know what its all about.

How do they interface with the laptop? I'm in the process of testing an MP3 box for my car.
