higher octane fuel does not require ecu tuning... it would help with any fuel you use... running methonol would require a lot more than ecu mapping and would take a lot of special parts...

fuel pump fuel filter fuel injectors fuel lines the whole fuel system would have to be redone but yes it could be done... a super ignition system would also need to be installed as well as a higher compression ratio... all of these things would require ecu tuning... but to run higher octane nope... pump it in and go...

Yeah mapping is involved for higher octanes if you change your ignition timing.
Higher octanes can also be used by manually advancing the timing at the distributor also.
But why would you care what higher octane you use any way, it just becomes more expensive.
Besides higher octane fuels have been proven not to improve HP, but rather just to prevent KNOCK and PING, and barely shifting the power band of the engine.

It was just a general question, you know lol, I always read about it, and figured i would ask, so to clarify, ECU "Mapping" is advancing ingnition time?

Thanks for the responses!

ECU "mapping" is the design characteristics of the ecu, it pinpoints what parts of the engine it is to focus on.
Ignition timing is one of the many features involved in mapping.

here is some stuff on ecu chipping... it is a lot to read and a lot of techno babble but here is a start on ecu mapping (chipping)... this is for the 300zx but the basics still apply on our cars...
