flushing coolant

How often should you flush your coolant?
I bought my car at 86k, and I don't know if the previous owners ever did it.

I change my coolant about twice a year in the spring before it gets hot and in the fall before it gets cold.

Hmm, ok. Do you guys do this yourself?

Rockstar240 11-27-2002 09:48 AM

it's not hard. It's easier than an oil change. Actually, it's like changing your oil without changing the filter, except filling it up is different. And there's a ratio of water to coolant that people tend to choose. Sometimes 50/50, 60/40......and so on. Oh Yeah....to answer your question......yeah I change it myself.

My friend bought his RX-7 and the person who had it before never changed his coolant. So, we decided to change it. When we drained it, the coolant was brown with dead insects in it. I found that odd, but changing your coolant is a must.

they sell coolant flushing kits at hardware stores for like 5$

Ok, I think its time to change my coolant. It's starting to take on a dark green color. Thanks guys.

So all I need would be a coolant flushing kit?

I should get a manual.

Very good move!! It tells you how to do it which is easy and plus it tells you how to purge the air from the system, which tends to overheat if it has air in it.

antifreeze every 3years green coolant
5years for orange coolant most newer cars vw,lex etc.
Basically drain fill with water or flushing coolant. refill water, drain then add mix 50/50. Be sure to account for antifreeze in the block try and locate the drain plug located somewhere on the block. if not just do a heavier mix of antifreeze as water is in the block already.. 60/40 watermix

actually..
this is what my book tells me to do..
flush and remove all coolant..
now plug it up then fill it up with water..
run the engine till warm
or when thermostat opens
then kill engine drain water
repeat until the drained crap no longer looks piss green
then fill with a 60/40 mix
60 % coolant and 40% water
it gives the best of both worlds..
50 / 50 mix sacrafices a couple of degrees of boiling temp
