Gas pedal button

Ok, so I'm just a little confused. I've never had an auto before and there is this button under the gas pedal that engages when I floor it. What is it? Is it to switch between economy mode and performance mode or something?

kickdown is when an auto tranny "kicks down" a gear so you can accelerate faster

think of it as downshifting..

you get more power at the lower end of a gear than towards the upper end..

pretty much it's for when you floor it...
