Ignition coil (aftermarket tach wiring)

I got a 5" shiftlight lying around from an old car (5L Mustang) and
I wanna try hooking it up. I don't plan on mounting the tach
anywhere but just the shiftlight between the steering. The tach
I will hide somewhere.

Anywho, the instruction for the tach's wires are:

White: 12V Dash
Red: 12V Ignition
Black: Ground
Green: Negative on ignition coil

I looked in the FSM and on the Ignition coil there is two
harnesses. One harness only has one wire; Black (which is
negative). And the other harness has two wires: Light Green w/
Black stripe and Black with Red stripe

I can hook the 12V Ignition to any 12V power source right? And
am I to use the Black ground wire from the one-wire harness that
is in the FSM?

I had the SAME problem on my RB. My tach had the same exact four colors you mentioned. What I did was spliced the green wire to the tach wire on the ECU.

Well it was more involved for me. I had to splice a wire from the 240 dash harness to the ECU then splice the green wire to that.

But anyway from what I know, that is all you need to get an aftermarket tach working. I spliced all the other wires to my radio power and then sent one of the 12V wires directly tothe battery. One of the 12V is so it only come son with with something. So when my radio is on, my tach is on. I think the other 12V is kind of like a memory. My shift light will never be the same because I didnt connect it to the battery

Well from what I read, it's best for the tach signal to come from
the coil. Now in the Autometer manual, it says the green wire
from the autometer tach should go to the NEGATIVE on the
coil.

Looking at the FSM, there are two plugs going to the coil. There
is a single wire plug which goes from the coil to chasis ground.

Then there is a 2-wire harness (green w/ black stripe and red
with black stripe) that goes from coil to somewhere.

What doesn't make sense is the black wire from the autometer
is already going to ground so I don't think it would make sense
to put the green wire from the tach to the black ground on the
coil. Doesn't add up to me.

Anywho I'm gonna get some aligator clips and see if I can find
a signal from one of these wires.
