Okay fyi the correct term at least where I work is ignition lock cylinger. It works the same way you house lock works only instead of having just one side with pins and sliders, an automobile and has two sides to work with, except for older cars like chevy and ford and dodge they started off with one key cut for ignition and one for locks, inefficient, YES. So we started double cutting keys to open doors and start cars. Suffice it to say if he can pull the key out he did not "rig" it. Although it is more likey that it is the key that is worn out. Ask him to take a look at it, usually it is the key that wears first constantly going in and out and higher the mileage the more worn the key. Either way both parts wear out and it is just usually the key first though. Sorry that I got on a rant there I am just full of information.
