Smile A little car advice for the new guy?

Hello all,

I'm new here and new to the 240sx game, so help me out!

Ok, I'm 17 and have been racing carts, and motocross since I was a youngster (still racing MX). I have been driving for a while and want a decent car that can be decked out. So the 240sx caught my eye for sure.

Every guy in the valley has a mustang, firebird, celica, eclipse..ect and I want to buy something different. I recently drove my friends brothers 240sx, I'm not sure of the model, it was newer (92-95?) and more rounded in shape. great car and it has Rwd which I want. It had an auto tranny (eew) and the motor was peppy. I guessed maybe 190-200 hp with the basic mods he had (exhaust and cold air intake)

I need help here because I do not know much about the 240sx. Is it true that I could get a skyline frontend and swap it out (body work). I would like to crank up the power. Maybe an engineswap?

Now, I have $6000 right now in cash for the car. I went to a small drifting demo and saw a sick looking SX. It was more square (I like that more than the round) what model is that?

If you guys could help me out, I would like a car that looks sweet (yet tasteful and clean) and also performs and will lay down my friends in their 280+ hp cars when we go back to the drags. I just sold my jeep and it's time for a car.

Give me the basics,

Costs for a nice 240sx with manual tranny (the square style ones), common mods, body kits (If I could get the skyline frontend I'd love that, they are my favorite car).

Just fill me in.

I'm planning

1994+ 240sx

half orange (bottom) half black (top) with a carbon fiber hood with some shape to it.

engine wise I want 280+ HP
and an exhaust that doesn't sound crappy. I don't mind the sound of a 4 banger and some exhausts have a deeper tone that sounds strong and classy (not like the ones that sound like a bunch of BB's being rattled around).

Sorry for the long post, my first post was a doozy!

here is a picture of the style I like.

That's not very square... It's an s14 95-98. You could swap s14.5 front or s15 front easily I'm not sure about skyline. As for the engine... Hm.. maybe a s15 blacktop sr20det it has 250hp or an rb25dett... The sr20 will drop in but the skyline motor will need a little work.

cost wise, what would I be looking at for the SR20det drop in?

I'd do it myself..but what would the engine cost itself.

here is a better picture of the 98 240sx SE

what other years share this body type?

the first one you posted was either a 95 or 96 Zenki s14 240sx. The second one you posted was either a 97 or 98 Kouki s14. As for your questions, why not take some time out and search, its all over the forums and the net. Five minutes is all it takes.

yeah I have done an engine swap in my jeep. I know the basics.

I am looking at some of these engines that are 2500-3500 and most of them look like hack jobs...

What am I looking at for a rebuilt or new engine with everything I need to bolt it in and go. all the wiring, electronics, ect.

I don't really care if it has the intake and headpipe, I'll buy some ceramic coated ones.

I wish I could find a mint condition 97'-98' 240SX s-14 Kouki with no engine, that way i could save some cash.

When I yank the stocker I'll just put it on ebay, try to get $1600 so i can repaint the car. I'm thinking orange and black, or dark grey with white stripes?

Damn, everything i think about these cars and what i can do, I can see my bank account draining..haha

for starters...if you want a 97 98 240 plan on spending almost all of your 6 grand on the car... you can find em cheaper if you search and look... you will spend less if you get an older year... like a post on the southeast section on this board... there is a 95 240 for 2 grand... that would give you an additional 4 grand to do your motor swap and body improvements...

second... if you are looking for an sr20 swap to just drop right in... with rebuild and all the wiring done in most cases you wont find one... most likley not a rebuilt one...they are all shipped in from japan... and in all cases you will have to do some work on the motor befor it is ready to drop in...

if you think most of the swap jobs are a hack then do better than others and make it better... to make it easier you can pay 350 bucks to get your harness done from several sights listed on this board... which will cut down on your actual work...

plan on spending 2500 to 3500 for the swap... you can get em cheaper... but remember you get what you pay for... dont go cheap on your motor set... if you buy a car that is an auto plan on spending more money to get things like clutch and brake pedals as well as clutch master cylinder and all the needed lines...

but the best advice i know to give you... search... search and search some more... when you think you have done enough searchin and reading do more... there is tons of information here on this forum... and most of your questions can be answered with the search button... get to know it and you will get farther on these boards...

Well since you had a JEEP and know that there is no replacement for displacement. Why don't you just keep the KA engine that comes in the USDM's, get some cusco or nismo engine mounts.
Get a used T28 turbo from an RB or sr.
Buy a turbo manifold, intercooler, injectors, piping, turbo timer/boost controller, and a 3" exhaust and down pipe.
Get the hot cam setup from the earlier model KA's, and retune your own ecu with biki rom, and tuner pro RT. You can easily net 325 HP at the wheels with that set up, and with alittle more than $2000 in parts for the turbo upgrade.

You will end up spending about $6000 on a s14.5, and an SE model s14. S13 240's you can get for $2500, and get way more options to pimp your ride. S13 chassis is also lighter than the s14 and the 14.5 chassis's.

good idea.

When i noticed the sr20 was only 2.0 it set off a red flag, that would kill torque right? I wish i could find an inline 5cyl engine!

My friend has one in his colorado (truck), those things make great torque and HP. With mods you could really make one of those shine.

Now the question remains...where to start looking for my car. Ebay had nothing right now, these cars are hard to find it seems like.

I would like to find a suspension kit (adj. height) and sway bar kit. I guess I'll head over to the track when looking for the exhaust, some guy with a POS tiburon had one of the nicest sounding exhausts I have heard for any 4-banger, but I didn't get to talk to him.

*edit* In fact, here-----> go see if you can work something out with this guy~ http://www.club240.com/forums/showth...961#post224961

The SR has it's advantages as well, but why go through the problem of engine swapping. SR's for a 2.0 also promote a good torque to HP ratio, it also allows for higher rev and redline than the KA. The KA on the other hand produces the same power with less rev and RPM, it is notorious for being a 4bangin torque monster.
If you like to shift early with lots of power KA is the way to go, if you like to shift later in the RPM and wait a little longer for that power SR is the way to go.
