mysterious clunk
mysterious clunk
Hey, I was wondering if someone could help me on this clunking I'm getting from my car...it's only been happening since I swapped the SR in. It's not audible hardly at all, I can only really feel it in my ***. it seems like something's hitting, hard, from right under the shifter or somewhere back towards the rear of the engine. It happens when I hit a bump, almost like the exhaust is bouncing up and smacking the car (I had 3" custom bent, it's no apexi system or anything so I dunno if it has clearance problems with the body), and it also happens when making right turns, much more frequently. It happens even when I'm not hitting bumps sometimes, during right turns, and hits repeatedly.
Could this be a tranny mount dying? Mine was really "gooey" and soft, I remember, when we swapped the crossmember over...

well there really isn't much sound to it, but what I do hear, doesn't sound like a metal on metal clang or anything, just like a thump...also, I was messing aroudn in the rain the other night, rolling the tires going straight in first gear, and the shifter was wobbling and shaking like crazy...I can't imagine this is normal, there was so much water (midwest rainstorms) that there was hardly any resistance to the tires, so this is what made me think tranny mount even more...
A clunk when making turns and braking is most commonly your T/C rod bushings. Look under the car, they are the ones that look like big donuts connecting your radiator support and your lower control arms. If they are cracked (which all will be eventually) they have leaked out the rubber goo inside of them and are no longer of any use. Replace the bushings with polyurethane ones or get some adjustable t/c rods like project silvia, cusco, etc...
It's only when turning one direction, and it's not under braking any more then any other time...trust me, I paid close attn to this because clunking during braking is a sure sign that your wheel is about to fall off. Just..eh, take my word
I got under the car today and I could move my tranny aroudn with my arm..so I took another jack and was able to raise the tranny about 2" from its resting position. The mount isn't broken or torn, but it's damn flimsy
