Need help with car registration

guys im having problems with what i should do wiht my car. i bought a car not too long ago. the car has not been registered since 97. i was talking to a friend and says i have to pay back registration for every month that i missed it. something like 12 dollars a month, thats like 1100 dollars for me to register the car. thats ridiculous!. thats almost half of what i paid for the car.

Is this correct, or are there anyway i can avoid this huge charge?
Please Help

Thanks

Call the dmv, the car may have been registered as inoperable. But call and see exactly what you owe for registration.

yeah, just call the place you'd be registering with.....you might get a more reliable answer.

if you bought the car recently and the previous owner was the one who didn't register the car that whole time, technically you're not responsible for it. because all of the unpaid fees are the responsibility of the owner at the time. I don't know how it is where you are, but in CA I had my car sitting in the garage for about 18 months and I didn't register it at all (not even as "inoperable") so I was due to pay about $900. I ebded up selling the car instead, and the new buyer whom I was friends with at the time went and registered it no problem. Also, since I no longer owned the vehicle, any late registration fees I was supposed to pay was dismissed.
