New to the 240 scene.
New to the 240 scene.
Well here is the low-down before is start doing some researching.
I've been into cars for quite some time, never really did MAJOR work like internal engine work (cams etc) just myself. Usually always sent my stuff out if I thought it was a bit out of my league.
I own a Evo pushing about 600awhp. My first car was a DSM Eagle Talon TSi AWD that was my first real project car where I pushed beyond the 400hp limit.
Now, I'm in the mood for a RWD Car. Rest of my friends are running FWD, AWD and I want to drift for the most part. Now, I heard one of the best beginning drifter cars is the 240. This is where it has led me.
Now I've been doing some research and PLEASE correct me if i'm wrong, but so far.
91-94 S13 240SX - DOHC KA24DE is the car I'm looking for, its easily swappable with a SR20DET engine down to the wiring harness.
I have about 5 grand I can invest right now. Which should be enough to find me a Shell and Purchase a Engine from one of these various websites I've found that supply them.
I want a nice Daily-Driver, that when needed I could take to some roads by me to start practice drifting.
Now my questions.
I'm looking for up to about 400hp. This should suffice anything I need to do if its street race, drift etc?
This year 240SX is the easiest to Swap correct?
Would a Red-Top be able to do this sufficiently? or what engine would best suit my needs?
There are a couple posts on here that I've been reading on cleaning/replacing parts etc.
I plan to order the engine and do a complete overhaul to not only familiarise myself with this engine but to also make sure it has anything that looks iffy to making sure its an A-OKAY!
The only problem is, I can't find many threads on Air/Fuel management.
Whats a good Pump for that HP range? Good Gauges, I know the Stock Turbo T25 will have to be replaced if I'm looking for the 400hp range. Any suggestions?
I'm gonna replace the brakes to the Z32's since from what I'm reading they are pretty nice. Exhausts I'm unsure of yet, but nothing wrong with just going to a bud of mine to make me a custom mandrel 3' pipe to just get it running.
Any of you live in a wintery area? how are RWD or this car in specific in the snow?
Again I have 5grand I can blow right off the bat and it won't take long to save up more. What else should I be looking into to reach the HP I want?
Thanks for all your help! Off to trolling the boards some more.

First off I would like to say welcome.
the 240 is a car very easy to work on bro.... instead of typing a bunch.. these links are good reading for you... much of it is covered here.. if you just want something Plug and Play you can do an SR swap easily with all the parts and still have enough money left over to purchase a hooker or two if you perform your own swap. the SR swap can be done inside of a day.
240s are a great platforms for drifting but there are others FR platforms out there that can get the job done also.

if you go with an SR this write-up is all you need also included are prices for all the basic things you will need for a successful swap

other questions
-240s SUCK in snow.. better have some Chains no Doubt.
-Walbro Fuel pump $99-120 dollars supports up to 500whp
-for A/Fr info just google bro Air/Fuel ratio is a universal thing and its wise to either have a A/F dyno tune and or run a standalone wideband A/F unit such as AEM Uego very affordable with some kinda of fuel management if you are looking to add bigger injectors etc. if you are just swapping and driving no need.
-for your requested HP level upgraded Turbo/Manifold/Exhaust /Injector/radiator etc upgrade can get you to a safe reliable 400whp no problem with a good tune Im not a Sr Guru so im not sure of the tolerance level. however the stock s13 Sr20 t25 runs out of steam after 15psi or so and turns into a Heat Blower aka ( Arnold Schwarzenegger voice) DeTonator
-91-98 are all DOHC.... if you go with an 89-90 you have to perform a simple body wire ( small clip located above ecu) modification along with the rest of the swap to regain Tach signal
-if done right the 240 can be a very divers car. can come from a drifting event and the next day run a mid 13sec 1/4........ i have done it with drift specs
-drifting is not about power
just to note bro, i know it sounds lame, but we don't promote street racing/drifting here... if you do it, be safe but, the track is your best bet to get the most out of the car in drift spec form

I've lived in northern new york, so for the snow part.
They suck, theyre too light to get traction in the amount of snow/ice you'll be dealing with. Also please don't rust out another S chassis.
Get a daily for the snow/ice/salt and you'll be good.

Post some pics of the EVO and Talon
Also 240 to some people are not the best beginning drift car. It is what you like so.
Also with 5 grand you can get a nice Shell or even a 240 with a KA and do a Sr swap.
But any way Welcome and keep us updated.
Yea, I'll get some pics up soon.
My talon breaks parts all the damn time, but I'm sure me always beating on it doesn't help either.
I've been looking around for any other type of car I would like to make a project but not many have spoken out like the 240 does.
I haven't really seen any around my area that are fixed up, all Evo/WRX/Mr2/Honda and a few of us still own our DSM's. Otherwise Supra/240/RX-7 the real badass cars aren't around.
They are really expensive around here to get parts and/or find a shop that knows anything worth trusting them to mod.
I've done some research and like someone said earlier, 5grand I can get a decent shell for about 800$, 3-4g for a SR engine, and 1g for simple air/fuel and I'm running. I lot less then most of the other cars, hell my talon didn't even get a swap, still running the original engine of course always maintained properly.
Also, someone stated before that Drifting is a different build all together from street racing. I know this, I'm just stating I want my 240 to have enough kick, that if I wanted to do some simple drifts I could.
Its a lot harder with AWD, let alone my Evo/Talon are rally inspired(mud/gravel/dirt) then hard surface.
Nice to know that winter times are crappy time to own a 240, I drive a Chevy Blazer 4x4 in winter times so thats not really a problem =D
The 240 community in general though is a lot more appealing then any others, you guys gives great write ups and awesome help.
I can nearly search for anything I need. I don't know what engine to get though, looking at a red-top.
Anyone running a SR with around 400hp? If so, what engine are you using, at least that way I know where my base is.

If you are planning to drift an at least decent suspension setup is more important than 400hp. You can have all the hp to the wheels you want but if your stock susp sucks you wont be able to do much with it as far as drifting is concerned. Before you go dumping cash into a swap look into getting decent coilovers, beefier tie rods, tension rods, rucas, toe arms, traction rods, maybe sway bars, etc etc (make sure all of your bushings are good too, that can prevent you from holding/linking a drift(s) all together). Drifting is completely different than drag racing on the street, it takes alot more thought. After that a redtop SR is just fine and you can have everything in and running for around 3k (if you pay someone else to do it).
Although I must say when starting out, starting with low power makes you a much more well rounded driver. I'll be going all out on susp and keeping the stock ka in while I build my KA-t, that way I can still drift while building another engine for more power, once I'm alot better swap the other setup in and keep it going.
I'm coming to the 240 from a 90hp AE86(originally) so big power isnt that big of a deal to me.
