please help engine will not start

ok for the past couple days i thought my fuel pump was going out. to start my car i would have to lay on the gas and clutch and turn the key after about a minute it would start. then when it would run the idle was like 1500rpm and when i would go to give it gas once i got it in gear it would stall if i didn't give it gas before i pressed the clutch. so i changed the fuel pump and the car did the same thing. well then i thought hey it's getting spark maybe it's not in the right order so i checked the diagram for spark order and i moved my spark plugs around accordingly. now my car will not start. it's getting plenty of gas, it's shooting gas out the exahust and it's getting spark. what is going on?

i'm guessing you totally screwed up the firing order.

the firing order is 1 2 3 4 in a z pattern right 1 2 on top and 3 4 on bottom. well that's what the manual says but i did some searching and it seems like everyone has their own firing order. how do you find the right one for your car?

the firing order is 1243 in a clockwise rotation... but as you said i234 in a z patern so you are right there...

what i would suggest is... pul the number 1 spark plug and turn the moter over until it is on top dead center on the compression stroke... you do this by bumping the starter until you hear air rushing out of the no 1 spark plug hole... once you have it on tdc ( set by the timing marks n the crank pully) remove your distributor cap and make sure that the rotor is pointing to where the no 1 spark plug wire is on the cap... if it is not in the right place then the timing is messed up on the car and you are going to have to reset it...

for setting the timing... read the fsm... and follow the instructions there...

Before you pull that plug, make sure you disable fuel to that cylinder.

If your timing is in order you'll need to test compression and cylinder leakage on all cylinders.

For great specs and how-to info, go to www.alldata.com purchase a subscription for your car and look up what you need.

To find EXACT specs for you car use the VIN#

i checked the firing order and all is good there. someone at work had the idea to replace the distributor cap and the rotor so i'm going to do that and hopefully. i really don't want this to be a timing issue. my car is in the parking lot at work and i don't want to be doing any kind of surgery to my car in the middle of a parking lot.

wikd when you said "tdc on the compression storke" doesn't that mean when the piston is all the way up?

REl) 5HIF7 how do you disable fuel to that cylinder?

part of me wants to take it somewhere but they want over 750 for labor alone. the other part of me is saying that it can't be that hard and sure as h3ll isn't worth payin someone that much. has anyone on here actually changed their timing chain before that could give me some insight on what to expect?

I haven't gone out to look at my motor but most 4 bangers that I've worked on are 1-3-4-2 firing order.

When you say it idles at 1500, does it at least run smoothly at this speed? If so, I wouldn't suspect it to be a spark timing issue.

Look into airleaks downstream of the MAF. Check the TPS. Is it plugged in? Coolant sensor is a huge factor as well.

well i'm going to check my timing today by gettin the number 1 piston to tdc and looking at the rotor. hopefully that will tell me something. could a crack in this piece do it too. their was some duck tape over it when i bought it i thought it was protecting a crack so i was going to replace it anyway so i didn't even bother removing the tape since it ran fine with it there. (the pic is from another car)

Your engine might be flood if fuel is coming out of the tail pipe. check throttle position senor on the air flow meter. if it can't reved pass2500 rpm and then die..meaning is going bad. check the wire also that wire up to there!

if now? its completely dead. you might of burn starter, over cranking. or the ignitor chip. if the idle id ruff..its the sensor on the air flow meter. Good luck!

now somebody please me with the timing issue on the sr20 det!
help!!
