ya man no problem. just go over to japan and buy one and have it shipped over you dont even need an importer liscence. and when you get it back here you can just go right down to your local dmv and get it registered no problem.

to original poster and for searching: he was being sarcastic, basically none of that works.

its a long complicated process and its not fun. at all.

well i wasnt expecting the process of getting it here to be any fun.
but im willing to go through whatever paperwork it is.
i was just trying to get an idea of what it involves.
personally i think its worth it.
and i did search.
this forum, and the web.
but every importer ive come across pretty much doesnt want to deal with registering cars in the u.s

but people do it.
i dont see why i cant.

just a thought ( i dont know much about gti-r's)...the one in the pic is LHD..i doubt someone converted it from RHD so maybe they were abailable elsewhere than only japan and could maybe be had easier??

or you could always just get it and never register it..use it for like a track/autoX car

you can register it as a show car or track vehicle (off road use only). no way to register it as a street vehicle unless you do what motorex did with the gt-r. crash testing of 3 vehicles, obd compliant ecu, emissions testing, etc etc...

What you guys really need to do is contact DOT. They will give you all the info you need regarding legalizing a vehicle. Look up on their website for the list of vehicles that are allowed to be imported via "Bonds Men" The only way you will be able to start anything is to go through a person who will pay the required bond DOT sets for that vehicle (i.e. motorex for skylines... formerly) then, you go through all the EPA and DOT testing that is required. If no one ever conducted the initial testing from DOT (i.e. crash tests, chassis modifications, OBD_ compliance, DOT windows, etc.) and unless you wipe your own *** with $100 bills, dont bother to even think about getting these cars in. It cost motorex millions in getting the Skyline to be US DOT and EPA compliant. I dont think any of us will be able to pick up the tab on this one. Besides, if anyone did it, it WILL be on the DOT list of legal imports and they will list who are the registered bonds men for that vehicle.

Oh and if you do have the $ for legalizing this car, you wont be able to buy insurance for it. You will need to purchase a bond certificate yearly for X amount to cover and loss or damages in the event of an accident or whatever. On average the "Insurance Bond" will be about 5K.

GOOD LUCK!
