removing cruise control

so i think i might remove the cruise control components from my car. i know there is a vacuum pump and vacuum lines involved. i'm sure other people have done this (even tho i searched and couldnt find anything about it), so does that vacuum pump (or any other cruise control component for that matter) affect anything else i should be worried about?

shaban 11-19-2008 11:23 AM

... why?
I personally hate not having cruise control.

crazydrifter 11-19-2008 01:27 PM

why are you doing that?

USMCDrifter 11-19-2008 01:40 PM

why remove cruise control? There's virtually NO benefit to removing it . . .at all.

Haha, I never noticed the cop in his picture. Thats sweet.

The only reason to remove cruise control would be for weight reduction or to clean up the engine bay. It doesnt give you any more power, just leave it on there.

does cruise control really have that much weight?

Actually, I just feel cool drifting, yeah, having real driving skill and sponsors and such, makes me feel really good.

jramosthe1st! 11-19-2008 05:02 PM

it's just a matter of blocking off the vacuum line that leads to the pump. then remove the pump and actuator.

240smoke 11-19-2008 05:28 PM

Well if your going to the extreme to weight reduce your car for drag/drifting/autoX/no reason then this is something that will drop the weight a little. Taking off alot of little things makes a big difference.

USMCDrifter 11-19-2008 06:11 PM

if you remove the engine . . .BAM!

That's like . .400 pounds . . .FLAPAM!

yes it would be for weight reduction. and yes i realize those few parts would only weigh like 4-5 lbs. but 240smoke is right, eventually all those little things start add up. its not just to increase power, as the lighter you are and the closer you are to a 50/50 weight distribution the better the car handles, and i have noticed that with the weight reduction i have been doing in my 240.

and i never use it anyway, shifting is just way to much fun :)

USMCDrifter 11-19-2008 07:39 PM

Is this your first car? How old are you?

240smoke 11-19-2008 08:23 PM

While your at it, remove interior, A/C, bi tchy girlfriend, excess wiring not needed to make car run, emissions.

And Dave, remove whatever is up your ass. Haha. It will make your car lighter by like 50lbs.

240smoke 11-19-2008 08:39 PM

Haha. Yeah, I dont try to be better than anyone else. Even though I am. Haha.

Alright just remove that cruise control and later regret doing it because you decide to take a road trip and your leg becomes numb from holding it on the accelerator for 10 hours straight.

240smoke 11-19-2008 08:45 PM

Haha. I wish I had it on my car for those 2 hour trips to go to the track.

USMCDrifter 11-19-2008 08:46 PM

Yeah, that's why I asked if it was his first car and for his age. Not trying to be mean, but I mean, if it's his first car, it would explain a lot of this decision to me. He simply wouldn't know any better.

Im at the point of even possibly installing A/C on my SR20. I kinda like the whole comfort/drivability thing. I am not going pro with drifting. I just enjoy it and do it in my free time.

USMCDrifter 11-19-2008 08:56 PM

Well, I'm not going pro, but I will be following the Pro-Am track soon enough. I enjoy A/C and powersteering and cruise control, I have it all, I'll be keeping it all. I'm at no "thirst" for power, so I don't have to worry about it and to be honest, even if I was back in 4 bangers and 6 shooters, I'd still go for the accessories because they make it very nice when you're at the track on a 90 or 100+ degree day. I've been at the track on those days, all the same people who are like "why do you keep A/C and full interior" are taking turns sitting in my car, LOL!

I'll even drift with the A/C on, it doesn't drain that much power and most cars are setup so that under full throttle your compressor shuts off anyway. I just don't normally do it because I feel bad that I'm sitting pretty in my car and it's suffering in the scorching heat. I won't even get into powersteering . . .that's just a God-Send. Makes drifting SOOO much more controllable.

HAHAHAHAAAAH

dude i drove 8 hours a night for about 7 months and had no issues keeping the pedal steady on the highways in iraq

hit the gym

240smoke 11-19-2008 09:03 PM

The only bad thing about A/C is that the condensor sits in front of the radiator and when you use the A/C, it gets hot and your motor doesnt cool as good. Add a FMIC on top of that and you have really bad air flow and poor cooling.

USMCDrifter 11-19-2008 09:06 PM

I think my cooling is just fine, especially in the car, LOL!

Bigger radiator, better fans . . .water wetter. . .

jramosthe1st! 11-19-2008 09:45 PM

this thread went down hill fast didn't it? anyways i remove things from my 240 as they brake and don't replace them if i don't have to. i do this for two reasons, one i don't want to spend any more money on this car. secondly it makes the engine bay look less cluttered.

battosaii930 11-20-2008 05:26 AM

i removed my cruise control cause it didnt work lol

also i had stock 180sx radiator in my s14 with s13 sr a/c never had a probelm even at the track on a very hot florida day. now i have a koyo and better coolant so im sure wont have any problems

USMCDrifter 11-20-2008 06:43 AM

riiight, anyway, thread cleaned

im 25, and i am wayyyy past my first car. my dd is a 98 civic (getting a little into the "ecomod" craze with that car ;) ), this is my track car, so it only leaves the garage once or maybe twice a month. im racin autox and tryin to stick to the rules, so there are certain things u can remove and others you cant. so im just tryin to make the most within the rules that i am allowed. i considered removing the a/c, but its gets really freakin hot in the summer here in phoenix, az.

USMCDrifter 11-20-2008 02:09 PM

LMAO! As soon as I read "autocross" I understood completely . .

In that case, removing your inner fender wells also removes weight and allows for cooling, just don't leave em off in the rain, a good puddle can and WILL hydrolock your engine if you pull enough water in.

Yeah, I honestly thought you were some kid trying to get "faster on the touge". I really hate those . . .but if you're a man of your word, you seem like you are, I believe you and I take your word for it. If you are indeed autocrossing, the only classes that do not allow the accessories to be removed are the stock classes. Outside of those you are good.

Is this for the SCCA, the NASA? I'm no longer a member of the SCCA but I'm still an NASA member. Which class do you plan on running? If you plan on doing STS or STX, then you're going to run into a LOT of scrutiny when you get into stuff like that. ESPECIALLY in the SCCA. Most are there for fun, but a lot are there for the win. If you win, they'll seem suspicious, especially when you win by a small margin. They're QUICK to scrutinize cars and will pull that card quickly. I'd hate to see you lose your car for 24 hours just because someone thinks you're cheating.

But yeah, start a thread in the Auto-X/Road Racing forums and we'll chat more about it there. Let us know what your plans are and how you plan on carrying them out, we have enough autocrossers, road racers and track drifters here to give you all of the help/suggestion you need.

-Dave

240smoke 11-20-2008 03:10 PM

I drift at autocross events. haha. I am a loser.

battosaii930 11-20-2008 03:34 PM

i think people take auto-x too seriously... i do it for fun but i mean wtf id give up my first place trophy if it ment they had to tear my car apart cause of some douche. beating armature's at a cone race in a parking lot isnt that important to me this is why i like the more lenient clubs here in miami like ER and Porsche club of america.

silviaks2nr 11-20-2008 03:59 PM

I love cruise control! makes the car more luxurious

thanks man i appreciate the good words. i am a SCCA member (as far as i know NASA doesnt do autox) and i race in STS class, although i think i will eventually move up to DSP, because you are right there are just way too many rules and not enough mods allowed in STS. and i really appreciate the good comments about autox. unfortunately here in arizona our local forum (az**********) is full of drifters. and i mean full, i only know of 2 other guys that autox after meeting about 100 different people at a 240 BBQ. anyway they talk crap to anyone that doesnt use their 240 soley for drifting. not that i have anything against drifting, i just like organized racing against my peers better, and i wish the 240 owners here in arizona were a little more open minded.

anyways thats my little rant. and ill try to chat more in the autox threads as i am finally starting to get decent at it and am able to give some tips and advice after 2 years of autox'n.

Not sure, if i click to edit your post i can't see it either. is there a naughty word in the hyperlink?

Biggamehit 11-20-2008 10:08 PM

well a while back someone programed in something that would blank out other fourms names.. i think its stupid, but people have their reasons.

fadedsilvia 11-20-2008 11:39 PM

i jus pulled my cruise control out a couple days ago, for one it dodnt work, 2 it was super easy to pull out, and 3 its makes the engine bay cleaner
i have an s14, and on that there was a vaccum pump mounted right below the diaphram that pulled the cable for the cruise, soo all i had ta do was take the cable off the throttle, take the diaphram off, pull the diaphram off the ONE vaccum line, the vaccum line jus goes from the pump to the diphram, then pull out the vaccum pump, otherwise theres no other plumbing or nething that needs to be done or blocked off
and mine was mounted on the inner fender so when i took it out there was open holes into the fender well so i plugged those

you probably already figured that all out by now, but o well, an sry for no pics

thanks man, that was exactly the info i was looking for, especially since you have a zenki like me :) did you happen to weigh the parts you took out? and ya cleaning up the look off the engine bay would be a bonus too.

anyway the site is a z 2 4 0 s x . o r g , and ya that is weird that this forum wont let you type the names of other forums (no naughty words ;) )

hatrick6 11-23-2008 05:45 AM

hey i also wanted to ask, anyone living in a hot state/city (like me in phoenix) removed the a/c? i was just wondering if i should with the 115 degree summers here. but the 2-3 hp gain and 25lb loss is really temping me. keep in mind this is not my daily driver, so any opinions? maybe ill start a poll....

Biggamehit 11-23-2008 06:25 AM

it was never about hp to me... i just wanted it gone.. **** was broken... and it cluttered the engine bay. also I wanted space to run my fans with my Intercooler. that is all lol..

Lord Umoja 12-14-2008 03:05 PM

Hey, I need a speed control for my car since the previou owner removed it instead of fixing it. Care to send me a price for it??

fadedsilvia 12-14-2008 07:40 PM

if its not ur DD, is it a dedicated track car? or do u still drive it often on the streets? if its not ur DD and ur willing to put up with jus having windows all open on hot days then id say go for it, that an without the condensor urll get a lil more airflow to the radiator
i live in wisconsin, so most of the time its coldish here, but in the summer it gets really humid an my honda prelude i had before my zenki i removed the A/C an it didnt really bother me much at all, the GF hated it, but i didnt care

o, and no i didnt weigh the cruise control parts but they were very light, if i had to guess id say maybe a pound or 2
