Question Rust in Gas Tank

First off the car is a 92 240 hatch that had been sitting for about a year and a half.
Okay when i was finishing up on the swap a while back i noticed some stuff that was fuel related.
First there was alot of orange crap coming from the tank side of the fuel filter. So that led me to believe there might be rust in the tank. But when i would turn the key and run the pump the fuel coming out the injector side was clear. Which is good because that means the filter is doing its job.
Second i pull the fuel pump to put the warlbro one in and guess what, there was lots of orange. Like the whole inside of the tank was orange.
My question is: Is this normal or a little much?
Even when i pulled the fuel pump out, the fuel was orangish color dripping out. And the net that filters the fuel before it goes into the pump had that rust powdery **** caked on it in some places. But i am concerned because i dont want to clog up the pump or possiably the injectors with this orange powdery rust ****. And i dont want to be replacing fuel filters every 2K miles.
Could anyone with some knowledge let me know what the best solution to this is. I did strain the tank the best i could. But is that going to help?
