Speedometer not working

okay here is my problem, my spedo cuts out on me all the time, it will be workig one day and the other it wont, anyone know whats going on? is this a common problem in the s13?

rudeboy 10-21-2002 08:48 PM

pretty much. both my tach and speedo do the same thing. i guess it has to do with the sensor. i havent gotten around to go check it out yet.

SilvaPwr 10-21-2002 09:19 PM

i know i need to fix it for it to pass inspection

rudeboy 10-21-2002 09:21 PM

i must REALLY have it good over here:)

i figured it has to do with the acutal spedo line or the cluster is busted or something

next time your under there check the sensor connection ti be sure it didn't get filled with water or something. hit it with contact cleaner. see if that works. i think the S13 uses an actual sensor not a line. the pinion type gears get broke-up sometimes and stop the spin and essentially dead the signal. courtesy sells new gear things for the sensor(i think) i know i saw em somewhere.

does your tach work all the time?
check these out

click that X

okay got underneath my 240 the other day and looked at the sensors, they are on the pass side of the tranny right? well these things are a *****! they are not easy to unplug. But anyways my question is this: which one is the spedo sensor? is it the sensor more to the front of the car or rear? and is there an easier way to unplug these things?

manofthug 10-24-2002 04:41 PM

same problem w/ me too only the tach though...so i dont even know my RPM level.....and mine's 95' wtf.......

lloooll and it's complicate to do all that going underneath...loool but i mma try that when i have time.......

xriz 10-24-2002 05:17 PM

mine was doing the same thing and it totally stopped after months i got it tested at nissan and it turned out to be the cluster i guess the cluster was burning out turning on and off at weird times or something but after i changed the cluster it works perfect

my man Dan with a 96 also has the same prob with the tach

Silva i cant remember which one it is off hand. i think the one towards the back of the tranny is the speed sensor so it can measure final drive.
the tach is probaly on the front to measure actual gear rpm's.
did you try to just unclip the sensor connector or unscrew the sensor itsself?

SilvaPwr 10-25-2002 07:54 AM

well i just wanted to unplug both of them one at a time and see which one was tach and which one was speed....but if i could get a defent answer that would be great, and is there any easier way to unplug the sensors? they are a ***** to get out
