pretty much. both my tach and speedo do the same thing. i guess it has to do with the sensor. i havent gotten around to go check it out yet.

next time your under there check the sensor connection ti be sure it didn't get filled with water or something. hit it with contact cleaner. see if that works. i think the S13 uses an actual sensor not a line. the pinion type gears get broke-up sometimes and stop the spin and essentially dead the signal. courtesy sells new gear things for the sensor(i think) i know i saw em somewhere.

does your tach work all the time?
check these out

okay got underneath my 240 the other day and looked at the sensors, they are on the pass side of the tranny right? well these things are a *****! they are not easy to unplug. But anyways my question is this: which one is the spedo sensor? is it the sensor more to the front of the car or rear? and is there an easier way to unplug these things?

mine was doing the same thing and it totally stopped after months i got it tested at nissan and it turned out to be the cluster i guess the cluster was burning out turning on and off at weird times or something but after i changed the cluster it works perfect

my man Dan with a 96 also has the same prob with the tach

Silva i cant remember which one it is off hand. i think the one towards the back of the tranny is the speed sensor so it can measure final drive.
the tach is probaly on the front to measure actual gear rpm's.
did you try to just unclip the sensor connector or unscrew the sensor itsself?
