I'm sorry to ask the noobie question, but what is the difference between the red-top sr20det and the black-top sr20det?

Redtops were '90-'93, Blacktops were '94-'98 and had a refined fuel map in the ECU.

can a blacktop go in an s13?

wow that was some amazingly broken webenglish but i wonder if anybody else can more factually tell me the benfits of black vs red?

No advantages at all. It's just newer. And yes it fits in an S13 cause they came stock in the S13 ('94+ 180SX).

black top has variable valve tech. its alot different from the red top. black tops come in s15's and if im correct around 240whp(or maybe its 220) and redtops are aroud 212whp.

hmmm.

ive noticed very little price difference between the two, so a black top is a better choice?

bolts to a 91???? maybe the mounts are the same, but different ecu most deffinetly

dont know how offical they are but sounds correct from what i remember

Hmm wouldn't the ECU come with a blacktop SR20det from say:
