steering rack

ok i have been leaking power stearing fluid since i got the car around 3 months now. i noticed a few days ago that the boot that goes to my steering rack was torn and just hanging there and of coarse sliding up and down as i turn, i talked to a mechanic friend and he told me theres some ring in the rack that is probably bad so i need to replace it, but he said since i have 150k on the car i might as well change the whole rack while im there. my question is if i keep driving it the way it is (and keep adding P/S fluid) can i mess up anything else? thanks

you will just have an very very dirty undercarriage and if you plan to enter any kind of motorsports, you will not be allowed becuase leaking will get you kicked out.... my rack was leaking also..mainly becuase the tie rod boots were gone.. after i removed P/S and plugged the lines i was fine.. im not suggesting that.. also a Rack job is pretty simple..

Replace the rack, if you just continue driving it it will only get worse. Maybe not right away, but it will.

Here's the rack, its just over $200

Here's a complete seal kit, just under $60. Keep in mind these are before shipping.

How much $ is it worth to you to have the new rack?

No problem dude. You and a friend should be able to knock it out in a day. Better doing it yourself than having a mechanic rape you.

Loss of power steering. Worse for some people than others.
