Surgery on my right shoulder soon... No shifting...

I'm having surgery on my right shoulder soon (to fix damage from a wreck) so the doctor says I will not be able to shift a manual for some time... my problem is all I have is my 240sx 5 speed. The worst part is I drive at least two hours a day on a slow day.

I'm screwed. Since this is all covered by insurance they would give me a rental? Maybe an auto. Probably not.

Sorry, no point in this post I guess... I just needed to vent.

LoL a chauffeur would be nice. I think I have it figured out though. I'm working it out with my mother so that I can drive her Volvo 740 Station wagon that is an automatic.... Ahh but I will at least get my wife to work.

I thought about driving the manual 240 anyway. The doctor gave me a crazy look and laughed. Said I would just rip my arm back apart.

I look at it as having to drive the old wagon... What will my mother drive you ask? She has a beautiful '51 ford pickup truck with a camero rear end and a chevy small block v8 and all sorts of edelbrock parts. I guess edelbrock is the aftermarket for chevy engines.

It gives her an excuse to drive her pride and joy, and gives me an auto for a week or two. Win/Win.

Does anyone happen to know if it is legal to drive an auto with your right arm in a sling? Everyone I talk to around my parts tells me something different on that one.

I don't see why not, if you can put it in drive and can drive it without problem then why not? Plus the doctor said no sticks, not no driving...

I feel for you man. I already had my left shoulder cut once, and about to have it cut again. Guess they couldn't fix it the first time around. It was hard to hold the wheel while shifting after my surgery. Best to listen to the doc on this one. As far as driving with one arm. If you think you can do it, go for it. I don't think I went very far after surgery. It just hurts too damned bad, not to mention can't drive while on meds. Good luck though

Yeah sucks to hear, hope surgery goes well.

Is her truck a stick? If not, why didn't you take that one!

I drove my standard when I had a broken arm that was supposed to 'never move' and stay in a sling, but that's a lot different having a cast on my forearm than your shoulder, there's a lot of movement...

Drift the Volvo :}

It has to be, i remember seeing a chick on TV that lost both her arms, so she drove a mini van with her feet, so i would assume a sling would be no prob

Thanks guys for your replies. I'm going to give it a week before I even try to drive. (that is going to killllll me lol)

I am going to use the volvo, but my god I can't even imagine drifting in that giant hulk of gold metal that is the 740 station wagon... That would be something I would love to see though, should be a good laugh. No drifting for me.

As far as touching her truck... Let's say this much. She KNOWS I love cars and would love to drive that beauty but she has owned it a year now and never even taken me for a ride in it.... I've mentioned that a few times but she just changes the subject.

There is no way she is going to let me drive that truck. :P

Thats the stupidest thing ever. Do you know how dangerous that is? Its not like she could swerve out of a little kid in the streets way, or avoid an accident. I'm sorry if thats mean or whatever to her, but IMO she's endangering other people by driving with her feet....think about it....wtf?

Learn to drive with 1 arm like me, its easy and way more relaxing than 2 arms. Use 1 arm to drive and when its time to change gear, use your thigh to hold the steering and shift with the available arm (your good arm) For me im a regular at it, peeps think im driving an auto all the time lol

I'm sure he could pull that off if it was his left shoulder that was out of commision, but he said it was his right arm. The method you proposed would be a lot harder with the left arm.

How am I supposed to shift with my left arm only? Doesn't that seem a tad dangerous?

Anyway, I Effing Fell off my porch today (with the help of mans best damned friend) and screwed up my right arm even worse... So now I am in some screwed up looking star trek arm sling...

And to top it off I found out last night my upper intake manifold gaskets need to be changed... I can hear air sucking in when I place my hand over the connection near the rear. The idle is screwed up too, most likely from that.

I would change it myself but now I am going to have to pay a shop.

Anyone know how many hours of labor from a shop I'm probably facing?
