wings off now what

the person before me started to get rust on his hatch and decided to take his wing off ,theres only rust where the 2 big holes are all the other small holes are fine, so he put shiny duct tape on it so water doesnt get into the hacth and looks like sh*t ,what can i do till i get a different hatch so it doesnt look as bad .the color of the car is that champane/silver color , i was thinkin maybe a different color tape so it doesnt stand out as much, any ideas?

Get some vinyl that is a close match to your color and lay it over it. I used red electrical tape on my old hatch.

why dont you just bondo and repaint it?

Bryan 07-15-2006 08:43 PM

I only used the tape on the big holes, the smaller holes I bondo'ed over and never finished. I'll put some pics up in a min they're on my other pc

yea i had a couple of big holes. your supposed to fill them in with fiberglass then bondo over them. i did it the cheap way a suffed duct tape balls in there then bondoed over it, lol. it came out pretty good. if i try to press on it hard it will probably break tho. but i only paid like 5 bucks for the can of bondo and like 5 for primer. still havent painted it back to white yet.

ideally you would weld a plate under the holes and, use body filler to smooth it out. luckily i have a wingless hatch but i still have to bondo my thrid brake light, wiper hole, and antenna hole. being the zipties and ducttape kind of person, i am just going to tape mesh on the backside and bondo them shut.

silviaks2nr 07-16-2006 09:55 AM

glue pieces of metal underneath and then fill with resin and glass mat and then bondo
not to big of a job really

how much do you guys think it should be to get a hacth painted,i was thinking of buyin a used hatch of someone that had no wing the only thing is that it would have to be painted. and for them to do it right they have to take the hatch completely apart from the glass and moldings.

Darkvillin 07-16-2006 08:35 PM

that hatch is in way better shape than mine was when i took the wing off. look around. i got a used hatch for 150 dollars and i went and picked it up. its not to bad to put on either. just have some buddys help you.

tonyfizzle 07-16-2006 08:46 PM

i got a price quote of 562 dollars to do it right if i bought one of somebody and got it painted the same color as the car,i think thats kinda high ,but you pay for what you get,so mayco is out of the question

I got a wingless hatch for like $50 off a guy on IFX. Here's a few pics with the tape on the big holes and bondo on the smaller holes:
