e-check or what ever the actual state appointed term is and smog are not the same.

no, that would be the egr valve. the aiv (air injection valve) does just that inject air into the exhaust stream to aid the catalytic converter to function at it's best.

it should pass ca smog test..just make is look clean so the smog guy won't notice it...add: for the pipe to the header downpipe, you can put a dime in and screw the bolts back in.that is what i did to mine..

i left california about 10 years ago so things might have changed, but iirc opening of the hood was more that just a visual inspection of the engine. as i recall the main purpose was to get the engine code off the vin plate. so assuming the guy doing the inspection knows nothing about engines, as long as the emissions of the swapped or modified engine are within spec there shouldn't be a problem passing.

but even if the engine could not pass smog there were a few mechanics willing to help out, for a fee of course. i could be mistaken in my old age though. btw, thanks or the nomination but the current mods do a well enough job, there's no need for me to butt in.

I like this thread, I did this the first day i bought the car. You dont really notice any gains or anythings. It WILL pass emissions without it. Makes a nice cleaner look in the engine bay.
