DIY paint job

OK I have an air compressor and it cost way to much to get a decent paint job, should I just go out and buy a hvlp gun and do it myself, can someone post pics of thier paint jobs and also tell me what steps they used when painting thier car?
Thanks
Ryan

i'm not so sure about this one being a first time DIY. Painting the car is the easiest step. Prep is 90% of the work my man.

Look it up, search google. It's out there.

me and my dad did our own paintjob on out crx it actually turned out pretty good we got a basic 30 gallon compressor, gravity fed spray gun, alot of sandpaper and time, some primer, activator, base paint, and clear coat (you can get the paint from house of kolor or local automotive paint store),prepsol, a home made paint booth out of plastic tarp in our garage, a neighbor from wyotech and some patience we just sanded all the paint off the car did all the body work primered it wet sanded the coat of primer then went around the whole car with a rag with some prepsol (to prevent fish eyeing) and then went over it again with a tac rag, laid the activator, a few coats of base coat let it settle for a while then laid a few coats of clear, not sure if this was much help but just a quick run down on how we did it heres some pics

Looks like a good paint job for a DYI job. How much was it in the end? And how many days? or weeks?

in the end probly around 700-800 but we had to buy alot of ondo and sandpaper cause we molded the kit and molded fender flares so that cost like a extra 100 or so just for sandpaper and bondo and for all the paint suppiles around $450 and the plastic tarp was free my dad got it at work the paint gun we borrowed and the air compressor was like $275 i believe but it was worth it but if ur not doin extensive body work and got a air compressor ur lookin at like $600-700 with all the body work it took 4 months the first time we won one show and took the windows back out and started over again fun lol

Yea i think i might go that route or maybe not it would just kill me to not be able to drive my car for that long. But i think im jus gonna get a wal-mart automotive paint gun for 45 and then get oem paint and clear coat to fix my fender that is primered.

but just the paint part didnt take but bout a week total but with all the relying on people to do the bodywork that never showed up and then waiting and waiting till we did it ourselves so didnt mean to scare ya away lol but just the longest part is the prep like drnovascotia said just get some friends over and have a sanding party get that knocked out then if you have no body work to do get started with all the fun stuff you can get the activator base and clear laid down in a day or 2 cause tou have to apply the clear within 48 hours or youll have to wet sand the base again but do what you think is best keep us posted

yea that wouldnt take long at all it might take a little longer for the bondo to set up since its gettin a little chilly outside but we had to like chop up fender flares fix the quality of our body kit and mold it shave the doors and all that good stuff but little dents and dings aint no thang
