about to shoot my car...twice
Okay, I'm completely new to the 240 thing, I've been a honDUH freak for awhile......but now I'm all grown up and ready to drive a real car. Anyway, to the point, About a month ago, Ibought a 89 hatch 240... I have plans for the sr20 swap, but for now, I am just trying to fix all the little stuff with this motor. I however, have one MAJOR problem: At 5200 rpm's my car hits some kind of rev limiter feeling thing. it started when i bought the car, and the speedo didn't work. at that point in fourth and fifth gear it would shut the fuel off between 3800 and 4100 then pick it back up again at 3200. i read on here somewhere about it being the speedo sensor, so i replaced it, and now it works, but it's way off, like when I'm goin 50, it registers 75. at 65 it reads 95...so on and so on. I no longer cut out in 4th and 5th like before, but now it hits a rev limiter type thing at 5200 in every gear. now here's the really weird part........I live in tn...so without the worries of epa testing... and tired of the rotten egg smell in my car....I had the cat cut off and replaced with a straight pipe.....on the way home from the shop, viola no limit! much better, then about an hour later I went to the store and it's back i tried reseting the computer and it didn't help, this is really frustrating because I can't even hang with my wifes geo. much less anyone else....so all this being said...my question is , is there a factory rev limiter set at 5200? if so, how do I get around it? oh yeah forgot to mention, when I was replacing the speed sensor there was 2 sensor looking things in the side of the tranny that were not hooked up, could that have anything to do with it...sorry for the novel, but I gotta solve this, my old honda buddies are givin me lotsa grief about abandoning them.......I really need to laugh last on this one................. so any help will be much apprieciated!

Was there ever a resolution for this? My '89 coupe is doing the same thing.
Previous owner didn't fix a broken timing chain front plate and got mixed oil and coolant in everything, made it all the way to the MAF. I've cleaned it up, but am wondering if I don't need to replace the MAF...

OK, fixed mine.
I replaced the MAF, but that didn't help.
Under the car on the transmission there is a 5th gear switch. It's between the speed sensor and the back up light switch. I clipped the wires (my trans had been replaced, if it's still factory there should be a disconnect nearby) and the problem is gone. The only thing it kills is the cruise control. I'd rather have full RPM range than cruise anyway.

I think mine may be a little worse off than yours, I've been under there and EVERYTHING except the speed sensor is cut and to make matters worse, my speedo quits working when it rains, which menas the car cuts off whenever it wants to, usually around seventy, but even when the speedo is working, it's like 20 mph off, like if I'm goin 75, it registers 105. yeah it's great fun.........lol (not)

gees, where's the sticky for this mess Anyway, I had the same problem with mine. The idle was surging btwn 500-900rpm. I swapped the fuel filter. Poured some seafoam in there and still the same. Next I poured some water over the vacuum lines, nothing...Then put the ecm in diagnostic mode and found a problem with the maf. I then unhooked the o2 sensor and tried to start it and nothing. Hooked up the o2 and put the ecm back to regular mode and now it won't start. I swapped the maf today and still it won't start. Not sure what to do next... I'm looking throught the FSM and have to figure out what to check on next
