engine sputter

When i am in first gear i give it full throttle when the rpms get to 2500 the engine lags or sputters, all the way up to around 3800 rpms. earlier today it was only doing it in 1st gear only, i checked my timing it was alitte off so i change it to 15 degrees. and now it does it in 1st and 2nd, but if i just drive it easy on the throttle it doesn't really sputter, i cleaned the maf about a week ago, also i had a whole in the flex in the intake tube so i, lol put tape around it to help. any ideas? its a sohc by the way

sounds like an air leak get some starter fluid and spray while the engine is running around the intake, tb intake tubing ect. if the rpms rise then you have a leak in the area you sprayed whien the rpms rise

Do a diagnostic on the ecu to check for codes. It sounds like you MAF. try reseting the ecu by disconnecting the battery for about 30 min to an hour and then reconnecting the battery and start the engine to see if the sputter is gone.

did you try pulling codes from your ECU in diagnostics mode?

no, i haven't yet, how do i check it on the obd1 isn't there a series of lights or something? i reset the ecu again today and i let it idle for around 10min or so and drove down the road it was clear up for a half mile or so then right back to what it has been doing, the only thing that seems a little different is that the idle isn't quite so smooth sounding coming out the exhuast.

The FSM will give you step by step instructions on doing an ECU diagnostics. A little tip for ya, after you reset the ECU by disconnecting then reconnecting the battery, get in you car and drive it like you stoled it. I mean drive it hard because by doing this the ECU will set it self for better performance and it will be noticeable.

i believe the fsm or chilton dose say something along those lines but not too sure. iirc while idling right after start up you should hold a steady idle an 3k for 2 min.

the complaints i've heard about obd1 cars is that they are not as reliable when it comes to trouble shooting codes, true or not idk.

but anyways i'd say it's ignition or fuel delivery related. a bad injector or misfiring plug something along those lines.

now did your car have this problem before you did all the work? if not i'd say you should go back and make sure everything got plug in properly.

no the car didn't have the problem before all the repairs, also it didn't even have the problem after until about a week went by of driving it, it seem to all started when i covered the tear in the flex of the intake tube right at the tb, but tommorrow i will check sure everything is plugged in properly i already checked the plugs when i did a compression check on it saturday.
