evap replacement or bypass?

1 Attachment(s)
I have been having idling problems for a while and I noticed that my evap ( I think thats what its called) wasn't recylcing the air the way it should be. Instead of cleaning it, it is spitting out tiny chunks of what looks like carbon buildup through my intake. I can tell because of the large dark spot left on my air filter where the hose from the evap leads. I was planning on replacing this peace but it seems like it might be expensive. So I was wondering if I should attempt to bypass it instead.

Here is a picture of what I believe to be the problem.

if anyone could shine some light on this issue for me, I would highly appreciate it.

its the aiiv. allows cat to warm up faster by using vaccum to flow air one way. bad design cus when it gets dirty the reeds stay open. you can bypass it and plug up the holes, but it wont pass smog, well it might if the guy testing doesnt know what to look for. you could also take it apart and clean the reeds like i did. if you do, careful not to strip the screws. use plenty of wd40 and a vise grip to break em loose. gl

well, the screws decided that they arent going to move. I used about a third of a bottle of wd40 and they never budged. My plan now is to take the whole thing off and submerge it in gas for while. Let me now if this is a bad idea. I'll probably try it after school tommorrow.

this is where the vise grip come in (locking pliers)

Hey use penetrating lubricant. works better than wd. spray, let it sit for like 2 min. then try and unscrew it.

PB Blaster is the best at tight screws/bolts!!!

+1 to pb blaster... just what I was thinkin. Spray it... wait 5 minutes... spray it again... wait 10 minutes.

Isn't that part of EGR? I just yanked mine out with the motor. And no, I don't have an SR.

nope, see the dipstick? egr valve is on the back passenger side of the engine

rpgfan 04-11-2006 06:37 AM

thanks for the help guys. I ended up taking the whole thing out and plugging up the 2 vacuum lines and the exhaust line.

After taking the AIV out I needed to replace the alternator. So I got my dad to help me with that and we got it in there. Once we started the car, everything seemed fine except for a loud squealing sound coming from the engine. Anyone know what could cause this?

re037 04-11-2006 10:31 PM

water pump

Jovan 04-12-2006 06:14 AM

squealing? the belts probably arent tensioned enough or too much. Check the deflection from two of the belts. I dunno the amount of deflection it should be. Maybe someone on here knows. Or the power steering pump, but that sounds kinda like a supercharger as revvs increase.

its ovius. you needed to replace the alternator, and after you did, a squeling soudn apeared, so you didn't tighten the belts properly. tighten them until there's not soudn, then soem more and thats it.
