head gasket swap...hints??

I'm replacing the head gasket on an 89 ka24e this weekend, does anyone have any suggestions that will make the procedure easier? or any suggestions on additional maintenance i should do at the same time?

Well while your taking apart the engine, I would replace the piston rings and valve seals and that adds like another 100K to your motor. This way you don't get any oil blow by. That is my advice.

nice thanks
any idea around how much time that will add to labor.
we thought we could do the head gasket, spark plugs, spark plug seals, valve cover gasket, and flush the cooling system in about 5 hours, oh and throw in a rebuilt head if needed. probably gonna increase timing by 2degrees too. and look around to see if there's anything else that could be done while in there.

that's the plan...and get it done to go to a party sat nite we'll see how it goes

well i think that it might add some extra time to the job, not know exactly how much in reality, but with all that plus the rings and valve seals you'll engine be almost completely brand new and would be needed to be broken in again like it was when the car had its original owner. 1000 miles under 3.5K and under 55 mph.

But time wise I don't really have a guesstimate but that it would be some added time

Piston rings and valve seals is A LOT of work. You'd be better off just replacing the engine than doing that much work. BTW I don't think you'd have to break it in again if you did that anyway, break in periods are for any metal particals in the engine and so the bearings get set in. If you had it machined then you'd have a break in period ,but not for that stuff.

i am NOT replacing the engine unless its an upgrade...this is just ****e to get it running and decently while doing some extra junk while i'm in there

well i'm taking the head to a machine shop to get cleaned and checked. they'll rebuild it for me if needed for $150 plus any parts needed. that would take care of the valve seals though.

When you break in an engine, your breaking in the piston rings and nothing really else. Thats why you break it in, so therefore if you replace the rings you break them back in.
