OIL and the KA24DE

Hey guys i'm running a stock KA24DE and I was wondering what is the best kind of Oil I can get my hands on for it. I know Mobil 1 synthetic seems to be high on the list but it's also kinda pricey for me plus there are also other great brands out there like Castrol, Quaker State, Pennzoil etc.

I'd like to know specifically what grade I should get as far as the rating of the oil is concerend because I have no idea what those numbers stand for.

Thanks for the help.

Castrol 10W30 or 40. People also use 20W40 or 50.

If you change your oil every 3000 miles then you can use normal oil. Outside that and the protectant additives start to break down. Mobil 1 is good for about 7500 miles.

Synthetic is not majic oil. It merely has uniform particles that help promote better ring seal and therefore less contaminant gets to the oil. That is the primary reason it lasts longer. I live in Florida so I never bother with the w(inter) number. Last number is only important one to me and I always use 30. Some guys use a 50 weight at the track, I just change mine before and after a weekend of hot runs.

Castrol and Penzoil use quality basestocks on regular and synthetic. Some gearheads I know will swear by Valvoline.

I heard that Castrol doesn't have thier own factories, and that they get oil from other companies.
Right now im trying quaker state, but I used valvoline alot.

The numbers on the bottle tell you how thick they are. The number with the "w" is for when the weather is cold(winter) the second number is for when it's hot.
The higher the number the thicker, and better for high temps. When there is only one number it's straight weight, meaning that the thickness doesn't change with the temp like the others.
Im in miami so I use either 20w-50, 10w-40, or 40

i swear i've tried them all, haven't noticed a huge difference. I'm gonna try valvoline next time. Do yourself a favor and don't buy the cheapest filter as well (ie fram), I was advised they rate horrible.

Thanks for the Info guys I think i'll pick up the Mobil 1 full synthetic runs about 20 bucks at wal mart and can be changed to 7500 miles (but i'll go to 6000 just to be on the safe side.) and i'tll still be cheaper then a regular oil change ever 3K miles.

Just one dumb question. . . How much of that stuff do I put in ? (KA24DE stock) I was told buy a 5 quart bottle and pour it all and Ill be done but i've also read that capacity is 4 quarts.

What is the right amount I gotta put in? I know that going over or under is bad news for any engine.

Thanks again for putting up with me.

i'm pretty sure that the engine oil capacity is 4 qts. also, don't forget to pour some oil in the new filter as well.

Why 10W30 over 5W30?... I've always used 5W-30 just cuz that's what the book recommends and we get cold winters in ohio. should I stay with 5w or go with 10w?

the book recommends the oil to use straight off the dealership lot. meaning less miles. i think its a good idea to start using 1030 when your milage is about 100,000 maybe less. high miles=thicker oil. 530 i have in right now is coffee black and, i just changed it. im moving on to 1030 because i just hit 90,000.

I use( always have & will) WalMart Super Tech oil. Made by pennzoil. The Supertech oil filters are made by champion. Which if you dont know make the Mobile1. Same filters, paper elements & all.

You all can keep spending $20 for 5 gallons of "brandname" oil & $10 filters I'll spend the $7 for the oil & $3 for the filter. I can think of other ways to spend the money. BUT I also use LUCAS oil stabilizer in the diff, tranny & engine.

Engine is 4qts WITH filter.
