Overheating (blown headgasket?)
Overheating (blown headgasket?)
Well heres the problems with my car. After about 10 minutes of driving my themp needle goes up to the line before H. I see steam coming from the right side of my hood where the coolant reservior is. It seems as though the coolant in the reservior is bubbling like crazy. My radiator was leaking so i found a used one a installed it. Same problems cept no leak and the coolant in the reservior is steaming much more than before
I thought it was a blown head but the syptoms just don't add up. There should be white smoke from my exhast and the presence of water under my oil cap. But none of that. the only thing i see that could mean blown head is the bubbling coolant and overheating
should i do a coolant flush?? I already spent 100 on the radiator and this coolant flush would cost me another 65. I'm on an EXTREME budget so anyone have any ideas on how i can fix this??
Raine?? or any of the moderators?? helppp

check your radiator hoses on the motor when it starts to get hot...bith hoses should feel hot to the touch... if you can get your hand back to where the heater hoses are check them for temprature as well... might be that you have a stuck thermostat or bad water pump...or it could be the blown head gasket... does your oil look like chocolate pudding???
Check my overheating FAQ and search
a coolant flush is $10 if you do it yourself. You probably have air trapped, learn the proper procedure to bleed coolant.
Check your water pump ?
Your fans coming on ?
Check for additional leaks ?
the coolant like that normally means there is air
Check your coolant for oil as well

well the oil looks fine. so i hope that means the head is fine
How do i check if the water pump is running right?
Rember my coolant reserve is bubbling so could that mean anything?
Thanks for the replies and where would i go to find the overheating FAQ...i did a search and the cloesest thing i could find to my problem was the thread on "brown coolant" him and i have the exact same symptoms.

alright well i took it the shop and they were FREAKING clueless too...arghh
they thought it might be the temp stat so i replaced it at the cost of 50 bucks with parts and labor. After the reserve was still bubbling and overheating so now they said its down to the water pump or a blown head
...man how would they not know exactly whats up, is this normal?? haha

i would agree with the water pump being the problem... if the oil still looks like oil and not chocolate pudding and there is no white smoke commin outta the exhaust i would lean towards the water pump as well... and changing the water pump is easy enough...why pay for something that you can do yourself with a book and a few tools???http://www.club240.com/forums/showth...873#post157873
i posted a kinda how too for water pump replacement there...

LOL..this is funny reading.
No one even mentions the first thing you should do.
How about a cooling system pressure test? Wow there is an idea.
How about looking at your $6 radiator cap. Instead of a waterpump.
This is all very basic stuff, that if someone was giving advice SHOULD know.
Not to mention Kang128 couldnt be more vague. "It seems as though"...wel is it or isnt it. It is either bubbling or it isnt. Does it bubble whike it is running or when you shut it off?
Just because you have a blown headgasket doesnt mean it will get into the oil. Only if it is blown between a coolant & oil passage. It will get into the oil eventually if it is blown between the CC & the coolant passage but it will take a long time.

cmon now no need to be like that project cheap13. I'm really short on cash and busy with work. Something like this is a real pain in the butt i'd like to fix quick
if i was too vague then sorry. Yes it is bubbling when i run the car and it starts to get hot. I even see steam coming out of my right side under the hood
I already did change the radiator cap and about the pressure test? how would i go about doing that

ProjectCheaps13, keep the negative comments to yourself. If he's being vague ask him to be more specfic, and everyone here is just trying to help.
Why do a pressure test if he's not leaking ? If you had read my FAQ the radiator cap is in there, so they have been mentioned.
Thanks for the input but perhaps use a nicer method for doing so.

not to drag ya down or nothing... but even if this does not solve the problem you will have a new waterpump on an old motor... always a good idea in any event...while i am rebuilding my motor i am replacing everything under the hood... every hose every line and filter... the motor i am rebuilding had new freeze plugs in it but i still replaced them... it is out might as well do it all so i dont worry about anything... i even replaced the ac pump powersteering pump and the alt... i will have a brand new motor when i am all done with everything... it should start next weekend... i hope...
ok i just changed the water pump/
man was the old one ****ty, the blades were all cut off cept for two. I found one blade when i took it off so i dunno where the others went?...inside the engine?? who knows
well once i finished i drove the car and same damn problem came
the temp went really high and the coolant reserve was bubbling a lot
geez i'm all out of ideas now, and i'm hoping its not blown head gasket cuz i tried doing that keep your cap open and then start the car to see if it shoots up. Nope didn't shoot up.
ANY IDEAS GUYS?....maybe i have air pockets? (but would that cause the reserve coolant to bubble) or maybe the pieces of the blade went into the engine or got caught somewhere
