? on rebuilding

I have a 93 stock. Anyone know of good engine rebuilders who can rebuild it for stock or performance? I'm in the south CA area. My engine is fine now accept for the timing chain noise, but that's $1500 to fix. Would it be better to buy a new engine from the dealership? I don't want to have to buy someone's old engine. I would have no idea what shape it is really in. Any help appreciated...

On the KA you can even rebuild it yourself if you want, lol. As for shops, not too sure. Haven't heard of any rebuilding shops around here.

you can rebuild it yourself, but that takes time and money, and lots of patience, I'm thinking the same way you are, my engine is fine, only 160k on it, but im already thinking ahead, just incase...dunno any rebuild shops around here, but found some sites on the net, but you never knoew the condition, so its kinda 50/50...risk it or dont...

I don't have the tools and I'm not skilled enough to rebuild myself. I'm used to the rotarys...

what sites? A local shop by my house who doesn't specialize in anything quoted me $3800 for the rebuild total... That's one hell of a rip off. I read about so many people doing these rebuilds for cheap. Anyone have suggestions???

That's what I said to them. I searched for hours, but every thread about this subject always goes unanswered, and ends up turning into a, ''why don't you sr?" I'm don't need a 240 specialist, just a reliable shop who does great work, and of course some help with which performance kits are best. thanks again guys keep up the help. I'm still lost though...

Its not that bad

Well with any rebuild with shops a lot of it it labour intensive. Thats where a lot of your money goes. I've rebuilt a couple engines myself. Not a Ka series. But a 90ish 318i BMW. Not that difficult. Only 400 dollars. The Haynes manual tells you how to disconnect everyhing, but I only use it for torque specs. So much time goes into cleaning off gasket surfaces. A $35 acid bath cleans it up nicely too. As for parts, I've never priced it out for our engines. I would guess it would be close to $600 without pistons. Close to $800 for factory replacement pistons. For an extra few hundred dollars you could prolly get yerself into some better ones. Point is, rebuilding a stock motor back to stock doesn't cost a lot, and you just have to have the time and common sence to put it back together after you pull it apart. Maybe find a buddy who has done an engine rebuild before?

I don't have the time or space. I'm really hoping to find someone who can do the rebuild, and of course I'd much rather rebuild with performance parts. I just need someone who is familiar with and really knows what they're doing.

well, if you read around, you'll see that even a rebuild with performance isn't really worth it with your power to $$$. i think there's a thread called "building a better KA". you might get a little more horsepower, but the performance parts that will go into a stock engine might put you back to a "why don't you SR or RB for that price installed" response.

i'm sorry i'm not being much help as to rebuilding

I'm not looking for 250 hp. Just a nice, quick car that can pass CA SMOG

I found http://www.importperformanceparts.ne...ek-nissan.html on this site. Anyone know if these are good performance kits?

Today my check engine light came on for about 20 min. It was really hot outside and I heard the timing chain clicking louder than usual, but my car still ran fine. What the hell???

yes, you'd want new timing chain, chain guides, water pump, oil pump maybe, and you SHOULD measure everything properly with a micrometer, vernier calipers, bore dial guage, etc. to make sure its all within spec and matching to the new stuff, and thats just to throw it together. honestly, a LOT of work goes into properly rebuilding a motor to stock specs, and if your going for power its a bit more intensive. not to throw you off, if you consider doing it yourself more power to you!!! good luck,

sage

ps. if you look up any large engine re-manufacturing companies they should do the ka24's, and they usually come with a 6month warranty or something too! can't name any off the top of my head however.......
