smoke

alright. my dad put some motor oil into my s13 ka24de. 10w30. I come back home and i take it out for a drive. then out of no where i see a grip of smoke comming out of my exhaust. so i drive it back home (approximately 10 minutes of driving) and let it idle for about 10-15 minutes. then slowly the smoke goes away. does any one know why this happened or if i blew anything or broke anything? could it be a blown head gasket or something? i dont want to drive my car all messed up. i would greatly appreciate some help.

thanks

Could be head gasket, spark plugs, carb build up, who knows...

Do you have any modifications done to your car at all? And have you ever noticed this before? Could it have been there and maybe you haven't noticed until now?

Generally, when you look at exhaust smoke, black means you're running very rich. This can occur if you have maybe i/h/e and didn't bother tuning your car, it could throw your A/F a bit of ways off to cause this.

If you've got white smoke coming out, that is an indication that you're running lean, which is way worse than running rich (can cause detonation), so THAT could also be a problem.

Another common color is blue...I believe that would be oil burning. That is not good. You'd be able to smell it too.

Seeing as I don't know anything else about your car, I can't really accurately diagnose the problem (also could be the fact that I'm not physically able to help you...lol), but definitely keep us posted, and good luck. You can also try a carb cleaner, like Seafoam, or something. That might also help if everything is running properly.

That would PROBABLY mean you're lean; as to why, I wouldn't know. It might be hard to differentiate the color of the smoke though, depending on the light, time of day, etc, etc. You can DEFINITELY tell heavy black smoke. As far as white smoke, is it STILL going on? Or did it just happen, and were you under heavy throttle when it came out, or what?

That is very strange...I would definitely have that looked at. It could be a number of variables, so we can't really narrow it down over the internet. I'm sure theres a lot of things you can CHECK for, but it's probably better to get it checked out by someone who can really sit down and diagnose the problem.

Anything else out of place? Check engine light on? Anything like that?

well, if it is white smoke, then you are running lean. That means you are not getting enough fuel to burn with the air the engine is getting. Try replacing your fuel filter (~$10), also, check your fuel pump for proper operation, and last, if all else fails, check and/or replace your injectors. That would be a good start.

i checked my oil today and my dad out WAY too much oil. im thinking that is the problem but i could be wrong. Could too much oil break something or blow up something inside???

im going to auto zone and picking up oil and oil filter. hopefully this fixes it.

thanks for the help

Blown gaskets are are generally burnt looking, and could have oil on them to name the least. They just leak though, nothing you can really do about them but replace them. Blown headgasket isn't too bad though, not as bad as lets say...a bent valve, broken rod, piston, etc. Stuff like that is a bit more work to replace...and could cause damage to the head...

Other than that, headgaskets are easy come, easy go...
