swapping out blown sohc

so i was wondering..... can you replace just the motor itself with leaving the tranny mounted/bolted onto the car? i've been searching/reading, but every post i've come across people have removed the engine and tranny together. my old tranny is still good so i rather not remove it. any suggestions?

It is possible to remove the engine, and leave the tranny in place. However, putting the engine back in might be a lil harder, getting the shaft in and making sure the tranny bolts line up. A logic reason why people pull out both is to get the tranny on the engine easier... and to clean/inspect stuff since it's already gonna be gutted out. If you got a cherry picker... might as well pull both, inspect things... i.e. clutch.

it is harder to not remove the tranny in the respects that it is hard to match it up and get the spindal in the hole but i did it without a problem. i just used a floor jack and jacked up the tranny as hight as i could put the spindal in and then set the engine down on the mounts and everything matched pretty good i had to shimmy it a little on the first hole to put the bolt in but it wasnt a big deal but if you want to pull the whole tranny yes putting the engine back will be a little easier.

^THANK YOU. wow after searching and searching.... finally someone who's actually done it lol. everything i've read has been something to the extent of "nope...too much of a pain, just swap tranny+motor together". i came across another post where one member said it took him like 5 hours to "try" and line up the holes, but couldnt get it. he finally removed the tranny.

Seriously - just pull it all at once. it's a lot easier to line up 2 motor mounts and a universal joint than to line up 2 motor mounts, 10-12 tranny housing bolts, 1 output shaft, the starter, etc. I'm hoping you'll be using a cherry picker for the job + a couple floor jacks.

BTW I've done it before. twice. =)

If you are gonna just pull the engine... have a trusty 2 x 4" to pry out the engine from shaft or have ur bud sit on ur windshield and kick the engine out.

back-yard mechanix kick ***.
