Upper timing chain guide probably, take off your valve cover and take it out, its not needed.

yea just get that gasket sealer. hopfully just that top guide will make it stop rattling. i took out the top one and the right one and my car stopped rattling. your screwed if the bottom one rattles cuz then you have to pull the oil pan and take of the front cover and replace em, good luck with it tho.

Does it click louder when the gears change (1st to 2nd)?
if so I would check rod bearings. I hope its not the bearings but until you check it out i would not drive it. driving with bad rod bearings could tear up your crankshaft.

ok so turns out after we put the thing togeather the car still makes the ticking noise.i had my neighbor whow is a bmw mechanic come over and take a look,he thinks its a problem with the wrist pin,,and the noise im hearing is the piston slappin around inside the cylinder wall. it only ticks at 2500rpm and continues from there. the car is driveable but i think i might just park it, any suggestions on what to do. i think it may be time for a swap.

if youcould get a recording of the sound, we could tell you more, right now we are just going off common problems, ho many miles does the motor have on it, how hard was it driven, try to get a video.

if its only got 150K it shouldnt be rod knock, or anything major unless the previous owners didnt maintain it, I've seen KAs with over 300K still running stong lol. Hope its nothing serious, If it is, they are pretty cheap to rebuild.

im rebulding mine, i got the rings for 70, rod and crank bearings for about 110 for all of them, overhaul gasket set for 200, I didnt have to get pistons and stuff tho, i think the pistons are like 70 a peice and they come with rings, wrist pin and snap rings. and head bolts wer 38. You could prolly get a used one for alot less but you never know the condition, or how it was treated. i would say rebuilding would cost about 500, all that stuff up there is $418, plus, i prolly mised some stuff.
