Getting my computer **** straight for college HELP

OK so im off to college this fall and my graduation present is a laptop. Yay.

Heres the thing. Looking for laptops under 1k, I didnt find anything I wanted. Closest was an HP for around 1200.

So then me and my dad got an idea. If we build a desktop from scratch that is just for music, ****, and AIM, then I wont need as good of a laptop because it wont be bogged down with viruses and programs like iTunes running with 15 gigs of music on it.

How much would a desktop computer cost me though? Im sure we could lift some old parts from old computers we have laying around, get a mother board, some RAM, video card, I dunno what else. Could we build something that'll run iTunes, mIRC, limewire/whatever, AIM, and keep the **** lookin good for under $300? concievable? It'll need at least a 60 gig HD

This laptop is for everything besides **** and music, including some light gaming. What do you think?

HP zv6000 - $949.00

AMD Athlon(TM) 64 3200+ (2.0GHz/512KB L2 Cache)
128MB ATI RADEON(R) XPRESS 200M w/Hypermemory(TM)
512MB DDR SDRAM (2x256MB)
40 GB 4200 RPM Hard Drive
DVD+/-RW/R CD-RW Combo w/Double Layer
12 Cell Lithium Ion Battery

Oh and Im not really good with computers... I looked at dell, HP, toshiba and IBM... anywhere else I should look?

Building a desktop depends on what kinda shiz you get. If you want to run all those programs, you're gonna need a good processor and memory.

That laptop looks good for what you're planning on doing.

Personally I wouldn't go with any named brands... they put too much **** on the computer that you don't need. Building it yourself is the way to go.

And if $1000 is your limit for a desktop too, PM or IM me (my fifth gear) and I'll give you some suggestions on what to get for your needs.

Whoa whoa, building a computer is easy as hell but, if you don't know crap about them don't go buy parts and expect them to fit. Baadakku might help you. Dell is good too. If your going to school they have discounts for students! Good luck and ****-on! (Limewire is awesome for downloading videos/ and stuff.

or you could get an e-machines which is like 300. my dad has one, and and it is pretty good from my experience. Ive worked with a lot of dells, hps, and gateways, and pretty much all of em aren't made that well, but dell is prob the better of the 3. The mobo on my gateway went bad after only 4 years.
