you think that there is a big triangle in the big pic, but it's not true. look at the point at the top of the red triangle and the bottom left of the green triangle in the first pic.

Look at that same point in the second pic. They don't match. Why? It's really a 4 sided figure.

That extra "1 block" of space is made up in pieces elsewhere, therefore both figures have exactly the same area.
