A Job as a PC and Network Technician for The Nielsen Media Company . . .
A New Phone courtesy of said company . . .

A fresh out the box IMAC, not even charged, labels not even removed, it shipped in from Apple when I got there this morning. The drive is a bit out of the way, but who CARES! This is the coolest job!

Well Linux is becoming more and more approachable by those who have never used it. With the incarnation of Fedora Core 9, I will say that Linux is borderline user-friendly. Double-click-to-install, a plethora of pre-loaded drivers and an easy-to-use GUI, I mean, it's really the way to go if you are new to the Linux environment.
It's hard for me to recommend a pre-built machine to buy as I normally piece my own desktops together. If you're looking to get away from Vista, simply order a new laptop or desktop and ask that it have XP loaded on it, or, when you receive your machine, upgrade to XP. Yes, I said "upgrade". LOL!
I love my Mac, I mean, it's a solid machine, my Mac at work (A G5 MacBook) is even more impressive with it's 2.4 CoreDuo and 2 gig's of ram couple with the oodles of software and hardware goodies that Macs are known for, it's really a dream machine . . .but they are pricey.
If you ask me, Macs are worth the price, but a lot of others will not agree at all. It's really a matter of what you have to spend and if you can justify the cost. For the average user (email, interwebs, video, pictures, music and occasional low-intensity game) no, I don't recommend a Mac. If you really DO want one, get a lower end model.
However, if you do anything specific to music or graphics (intense gaming, video rendering, graphic processing, music processing, music editing/creation) then a Mac really is the only way to fly if you want to fly right.
I'm not sure if that answer your question, LOL! Let me know.

P.S: Ryan, what's up man, long time no talk, we've missed you bro! Nah, they didn't get me an IPhone, that would have been cool, it's just a simple Verizon Motorola W385. Nothing special.

well you really dont need to spend much to be an intense gamer... i just built a new pc i have a nvidia 8800GT and it can take pretty much anything i can throw at it except for crysis lol. Crysis is the ONLY game i cant play with all the settings on maximum and its not even a top of the line card.
BUT i do realize its not just the video card that does everything im running a decent AMD 2 5400+ black eddition over clocked at 3.2ghz stable 8 hours on orthos air cooled.
anyway all im saying is you dont need to spend insane amount of money to make a pretty good pc gaming machine people that spend that kind of money only care about benchmarks.
