Is this a feasible plan
Is this a feasible plan
I should be done paying off my daily driver this year so im looking into a project car. I figure the 240 is the way to go cause I can get one cheap, there are tons of interchangable parts and its rear wheel. Im really just looking to make a fast car. I DO NOT WANT TO DRIFT. With that in mind I was thinking a 91-93 hatch because it will be lightest. Please correct me if Im wrong. Edmunds has the 91 lighter than a 93 so I guess earlier is better. I plan to gut the entire thing of anythiing that doesnt make me faster or tell me how fast Im going, and then add a bit of weight where needed for as close to 50/50 as I can. I want to stick with a 4 cylindar so Im thinking the sr20det is what I want. Heres where my questions come though. I want the s15 motor and tranny. I really want this for the 6 speed. I know its weaker but Im comfortable with 6 speeds and I figure Ill be rebuilding it anyway and will probably cryo the gears. Its also a plus that the s15 has a few more ponies out of the box. My question is why dont I see this conversion anywhere. People swap s14s all day long but I never see s15. I figure the front clips for s15 cost a bit more but I figured more people would have this. Long story short thats my plan. Please feel free to tear it up, I have a bit of time to work things out before I commit to it.
Honestly I can't say that i've never heard about the S15 swap, but I do think that there are some issues with the swap. For some reason a different driveshaft is needed sticks into my head. Along with some other fitment problems. Also the S15 engine is much much more expensive to get your hands on. With the amount of money you spend on that you can just use to rebuild a redtop or blacktop. 91's are lighter simply by virtue of the engine model a KA24E not KA24DE I believe I could be wrong, the hatch is definetly the way to go if you can find a good one. I have heard of fitting a six speed gearbox to the S13 or S14 SR's but I forget it was from and don't know about the customiztion to use it. If you have the money and the time and are looking for a way to make a cool car I'd say go for it!! I'm sure there's more information out there for you but since I have a S13 redtop in my garage.... sorry but just keep searching
.
For the s15 you need the engine, tranny, and I believe the rear end. There is more custom fab involved in this SR than there is any other Silvia SR. It's more expensive, and will be more time consuming. I have seen it done plenty of time, but most people figure the money they save by going s13 SR, after spending as much as they would have on the s15 engine they could be making more power.
Also I believe the s13 coupe is lighter than the hatch, that rear glass is heavy as hell.

hmm well thats good to know. Ill look more into the weight issue. It would probably be the same probs to put a 6 speed on an s14 blacktop with the rear end if i try that huh? I did look into front clips and found that the s15 are about 6000 where as the s14s are like 3000. But i did see packages including the rear end stuff. I guess i can call up some places and see if i can just get the swap stuff cause i dont really want to do a front end conversion. ither way its a long way off. Also I remember reading that theres something diff from the s15 to s14 blacktops mechanically, I wanna say something like vvt but Im not sure.
The s14 SR's have VVT timing, the s13's I know don't and I don't know about the s15 engine. Not all front clips come with body panels, the real reason to get the front clip is because you are guaranteed to have everything you will need for the swap. I don't think it is possible to put the 6-speed on the s13 or s14 at all. If you would go s15 in an s13, like I said its alot of work and you will also need custom driveshaft. If your deadset on going SR why not just go s13?
Ok. So given the hypothetical I want to spen say 10000. on the car and engine. I will be doing most work myself. What do you think would be the best setup. SR or RB. I kinda wanted to do SR cause I like the 4 banger idea. But I was also wanting that 6 speed. How much more weight is an rb. Besides the second turbo whats the diff between an rb25 and rb26. Is it easier to install an rb instead of an s15?
Ok I thought all skylines were all AWD. Appently its the rb26 ones. Just using the site sponser links I found the RB26 is cheaper than the s15. It was only like 3100 plus shipping for the motor/tranny and electronics. I would still need a rear end but can you convert the AWD to Rear wheel?
here, this might be some interesting reading for 'ya even though you're nowhere near FL~ http://members.shaw.ca/kfgroup/240sx_-_2jz.htm
Good read. That really makes me want the SR more. As tempting as a good old supra engine sounds I dont need all that now. What I really want out of this project is some good old hands on time with the car. I dont want t to be in some shop with me calling every week. I wanna do My own tear down. Get a new motor. Build up said motor put it back in, Maybe throw on some paint so it looks decent and have a go around town. The SR is looking pretty good to me. But I really wish I could get that 6 speed.

ive done the rb swap and sr. rb i more time consuming plus it requires a little more custom parts like driveshaft.its a tight fit but weight isnt really an issue. my s14 cornered well after i had tein coilovers on it. i didnt really notice much of a weight change in cornering either. on the other hand sr has a lot of interchangeable parts. so its easier to keep it maintained. as in less down time. its also easier to work on due to the fact the rb makes it very cramped up front. i had an inch or less clearance from power steering pump pulley to fan on radiator. if you want a six speed modify one to fit. you dont have to use
a cut and paste set-up. going the custom route is always a possibility. i wouldnt waste my time but you might want to. find a six speed that will mate up and still fit through for the shifter and as long as the splines fit up. then have a custom bell housing made. it is that easy, except this costs a lot or is a lot of hard work to make a bell housing.
