Hi Everyone, I'm A N00B
Just sayin Hi to everyone. Im Steve (really). Im from AZ, in the Army, married w/ my first son on the way and i have and 89 S13 Hatch. Its black and stock. Love the hell out of it anyway cuz its still in great shape and just a fun car to drive. I have alot of plans for it if i can ever be home long enough to do some work to it. Unfortunately I havent made up my mind on an engine yet. I pretty much know what i want to do to it visually just cant make up my mind on ow many cylinders I want. another reason why i love these damn cars cuz there are so many different things you can do, its great. i also have discovered that since i crossed over from the evil riceboy honda world that 240 owners and nissan guys in general are really open minded and willing to help you. again hope to talk with you guys soon and share some thoughts.

Welcome to the club Steve you should like it here.
As far as cylinders go, the s chassis in it's essence was designed for 4 cylinder turbo charging you may want to go that route, it's much more affordable, as well as keeping the chassis proportionate to it's body weight distribution.
The KA is a great candidate for turbo charging with a very large torque band or there are other options such as the sr20det with it's peppy rev range, or if you feel the need for a lot of power there are six cylinder turbo engines as well that can fit the s chassis with modifications to the transmission mounts and engine mounts, along with new wiring harness for the changes, (these would be the range of RB20,RB25, and RB26det's.
You should also look into modifying the chassis/suspension, you have an old car and the suspension should come first with modifications.
I would recommend the peek performance sub frame spacer bushings, they cost $85.00 and the install is very easy and can be done in under 2 hours. Tie rods should also be replaced with stock OEM or an upgrde after market that best suits your needs. You should also look into more rigid struts such as KYB AGX or KONI brands. If you want full performance suspension you can move onto something more expensive as KTS, Silk Roads, Tanabe, or TEIN.
Best bang for your buck upgrade as far as braking goes is the 300z/Z32 chassis front brakes (and rear brake if desired), this is known as the big brake 5 lug combo for our little s13's and will allow your car to stop on a dime.
Welcome and hope you like it here and that the info can be most abundant here for you.
